It’s cold and chilly 🥶 here in the Hunter Valley, but Spring is not far away, meaning our little vege/flower garden will be up and running again. Last year we were able to plant some 🍅, 🥕 and 💐, which our young clients really enjoyed picking 👧🏻👦🏼👧🏽

Gardening can be a grounded and nervous system regulating experience during session and one we are proud to offer at SEVA House.

Open to suggestions of what we should plant in Spring 🤔

New studies show that childhood trauma can rewire the brain and nervous system, leading to lasting changes in emotional regulation and physical health. Areas like the amygdala and prefrontal cortex are deeply affected, often causing anxiety, hypervigilance, or chronic illness in adults. Healing is possible through neuroplasticity and trauma-informed therapies.

What is FW Jobs Academy?
Jobs Academy is a year-long, virtual program that equips you with the knowledge and connections to return to work and thrive.

The program is flexible, self-paced and - thanks to NSW Government funding - completely free for participants.

Jobs Academy was created by FW, an organisation that makes work fairer, better, and more accessible for women.

On acceptance into the program, you’ll receive access to everything you need to kickstart your return-to-work journey.

The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, one year after the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament. The Bringing Them Home report is a result of a Government Inquiry into the past policies which caused children to be removed from their families and communities in the 20th century.

Following this, in 2000, there was one issue that was high on the agenda at the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk for reconciliation – an apology to the Stolen Generations.

Today, twenty-three years after the Bringing Them Home report and twelve years since the National Apology, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still 10.6 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be removed from their families.

We cannot begin to fix the problems of the present without accepting the truth of our history.

Sorry Day asks us to acknowledge the Stolen Generations, and in doing so, reminds us that historical injustice is still an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Islander families, communities, and peoples.

🌧️ WHEN THE SKIES OPEN: CARING FOR YOURSELF & LOVED ONES 🌧️
As the Hunter Valley experiences intense rainfall and flooding today, many of us are feeling the pressure both externally and internally.
During these challenging weather events, our nervous systems can become as overwhelmed as our local waterways. Here are practical skills to help you and your loved ones navigate both the literal and emotional storms:
✨ SELF & FAMILY CARE TOOLKIT ✨
1️⃣ PAUSE & GROUND: When feeling flooded with worry, place both feet on the floor, take 3 deep breaths, and name 5 things you can see. Model this for children to help them regulate too.
2️⃣ CREATE CONNECTION ISLANDS: Designate tech-free times to truly connect with loved ones. Even 15 minutes of undivided attention strengthens resilience more than hours of distracted presence.
3️⃣ VALIDATE ALL FEELINGS: “It makes sense you’re feeling anxious/frustrated/scared” - acknowledging emotions helps process them rather than becoming overwhelmed by them.
4️⃣ ESTABLISH SAFETY RITUALS: Regular check-ins, comfort objects for children, and consistent routines provide security when external circumstances feel chaotic.
5️⃣ COMPASSIONATE BOUNDARIES: It’s okay to limit news consumption and protect your energy. You’ll be better equipped to support others when you’ve attended to your own regulation first.
Remember: Just as we prepare emergency kits for weather events, intentionally practicing these skills builds your family’s emotional resilience for life’s inevitable storms.
Stay safe, Hunter Valley ❤️

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

The Vagus Nerve plays a crucial role in regulating our bodily functions, nervous system and supports us to ‘rest and digest’.

Vagus nerve stimulation (naturally) can aid in our overall health and wellbeing. Ways we can stimulate our vagus nerve include:

Humming, Singing, and Laughing: The vagus nerve runs along our throat and vocal cords.

Chewing: This has been shown to activate the vagus nerve.

Meditation and Breathing: Not just any breaths, but deep, slow breaths have been shown to stimulate the vagus nerve.

Gargle water: again, this stimulates the vagus nerve and our vocal cords.

Cold Exposure:Cold slows our bodies down. The nerve responsible for slowing us down is…the vagus!

If you’ve used Vagus Nerve stimulation, what did you find most helpful?
