The more you read this quote from Kant, the deeper you are likely to feel it!

The 'rules' we follow are supposed to bring us a sense of what?

Whose 'rules' are they? Why do we follow them? What are we trading? And what are we hoping for in return for our conformation?

It is no small wonder that we are experiencing a time in our culture/society where it feels like there are unprecedented levels of "stress", "anxiety" and "depression" (just for starters)... I use the inverted commas because we separate these experiences from the self as disorders as a means of then being able to variously use them or resolve them individually as "the problem" (as contexts may dictate), rather than own them as part of the human experience that has been crafted through the mechanism of virtue (or to be more germane, morality).

Morality is important in civilised society, without it we might never have developed to where we are now, but what we might now benefit from is an awareness of these things and of our capacity to actively choose so that we might live more authentically toward achieving our own goals and ambitions.

Big philosophical questions, or big personal development questions? Yes! Consider sitting with the quote below. What comes up for you? Do you want to dig into it a bit? Atlas Counselling can help support you in that journey.

And this is why important or significant communications are best done (at least) over the phone (if not in person), because a text can be misinterpreted SO easily.

I think the majority of us can be accused of using text messaging (or other written medium) to communicate, particularly when those communications are about difficult things.

Many of the concerns that clients bring into the Atlas Counselling space can be improved with good ol' communication skills and strategies.

Do you think your communication could use some work? Perhaps Atlas Counselling can help!

Let's hope sharing this reel works...

You might have heard me say something similar?

Oftentimes "why" isn't the thing to focus on... it's recognising the "what" and accepting "that" it is happening that teaches you mastery x

We can work on this together if you think you could benefit from support.

People pleasing is something that a lot of people struggle with!

It shows up frequently in the Atlas Counselling space. An antidote for the effects of people pleasing is Authenticity.

Working through the conflicting thoughts, opinions and judgements that we form, co-opt, adopt or internalise through our lives is not always a straight line and it seldom "easy". Atlas Counselling may be able to help!

I am not very good with technology, so I'm not sure how this will 'share', but in the event that the video doesn't come up automatically, when you have a few quiet minutes, please consider watching the video by clicking the link.

This is a 'magic trick' performed on Australia's Got Talent.

Please note: This video references mental health struggles and suicidality.

This one is for more than only the "she's" out there - This one is something for all of us to consider...

I witness that many people are fearful of not being "productive" enough...they fear they're not doing enough or that they are not enough and I think that this poem is reflective of that angst but also highlights the importance of 'being'.

Busy-ness can be a very effective form of avoidance, and while there is value to considered avoidance, and there is a time and place for it, it is not often very helpful as an ongoing solution in the long-term.

However...we're "trained" to be avoidant in many ways...because it makes us more productive resources and also, more comfortable for others to be around sometimes...but there is no authenticity in that; there's not usually a 'real' purpose to it; certainly there is not a lot of self-awareness or self-advocacy in being avoidant.

When you're ready to look into the avoidance strategies that you rely on, Atlas Counselling can help teach you how to identify them and begin the process of retraining you to live more authentically and in line with your own values and towards your own goals. Atlas Counselling can help you to learn to advocate for yourself in your relationships and your life.

I can't recall if I have shared this before, or if I've been saving it for a time that 'felt right' to share it...but it feels right this morning, so here it is.

We spend so much time rejecting, avoiding, distracting or dismissing felt experiences that are uncomfortable. I don't think that a day in the therapy space goes by without this image being brought to my mind.

This is what I mean when I say to clients that there is great power in being able to hold space for our discomfort. Learn about it; what it looks like, feels like and how it manifests in and around me. In doing so we are able to honour the experience and risk meeting the unmet need with self-respect.

If you're feeling like you could benefit from airing out the receptacle where we often stuff uncomfortable and painful emotions; seek to harness the power of that awareness, and make values-driven choices toward achieving your goals, Atlas Counselling could help.

The Official Launch

This has been years in the making, and now it is FINALLY time.

Atlas Counselling was established to service a space less spoken about within the “helping professions”. Here at Atlas Counselling the focus is not finding solutions so much as finding the way through the process. This is an important distinction.

When you engage with Atlas Counselling, you are engaging in a process. You will begin on a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness. The you that is actually IN your experience. Often our problems lay in the space between what our reality is, and how that picture compares with what we think our reality “should be” and the struggle with getting one to reflect the other.

I am often asked what area of counselling I will specialise in? A difficult question to answer in a world of boxes and pigeon holes - a world of parameters and labels. I will often respond with something like “My intention is to specialise in the human condition”. What this means is: what it is to be you in your life, unique and colourful. Life is rarely (I’d argue, ever) sat nice and snug in a box with boundaries and expectations all uniform and simple - where’s the fun in that? No, life is full of contradictions and pressures and desires and fears. Worse thing about it is, you didn’t even get to choose all of the things that you have seen, heard, touched, tasted and felt...so really, you are the sum of everything and everyone that has come before you. So, because you are just one person trying to embody and carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, you have to pick and choose the boundaries and parameters that you adhere to - No wonder things can be so incredibly overwhelming at times.
