Newcastle local Sophie Pigott, 27, was diagnosed with Stage I melanoma at 24 and more recently had another melanoma on her ankle surgically removed. With her uncle on her dad’s side having passed away from melanoma at the age of 50, Sophie has stepped up as event organiser for Melanoma March Newcastle, and is marching to raise awareness and funds for the disease in the hope of saving lives.

"I grew up in the sun—surfing, bike riding, swimming, and playing outdoor sports—and in my teens, I spent a lot of time sunbaking. But I never thought I would get melanoma."

“After my first diagnosis, I became extremely careful in the sun, but three years later, at the age of 27, I was diagnosed with a second melanoma. I’ve had a total of 14 moles removed and am covered in scars. My message is that melanoma does not discriminate—no matter your skin type or how young you are. Please be sun safe, look after your skin, check for changes and stop sunbaking! Too many lives have been lost to one of the most preventable cancers."

You can march with Sophie at Melanoma March Newcastle this Sunday 9 March at Nobby's Beach, starting at 8:15am.

If the UV index is 3 or more you need sun protection.

Save your skin from skin cancer (including melanoma), sun spots and premature ageing!

You can check the UV index on weather apps, making it super accessible.

The UV index indicates the strength of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The higher the index the greater the potential for damage to your skin. UV cannot be seen or felt, and you can still get burnt on days that are cool or cloudy.

95% of melanomas are caused by overexposure to UV radiation.

5 ways to protect yourself from the sun when enjoying the outdoors:
1. Seek SHADE ⛱
2. Wear a HAT with a broad-brim 🤠
3. CLOTHING 🥼 that covers
4. SUNNIES 😎 to protect your eyes and delicate skin around the eyes
5. 50+ SUNSCREEN 🧴 on all exposed skin

Take your skin seriously!
