Dr Lowe isn’t working today, tomorrow or Friday.

Not laziness but I had some minor heart surgery today.
The good news is that yes, I do have a heart. And it’s in relatively reasonable condition. There’s a bit of follow up (changes in medication, more exercise and not eating as much 😂).

It was interesting being on the other side of treatment…being the patient rather than the clinician. And I made a big effort to be a perfect patient of course. Hospital is like the dental setting: unfamiliar, alien and a bit intimidating. But the human elements (clerical and reception, nursing staff and doctors) made the process easy.

And I’ve got a man crush on my cardiologist, Dr Peter Sage. He is personable, empathetic, kind, knows his stuff and I trust him with my life.

We’ve had a new access created for the practice.
Now patients can come into our reception area directly, without going through the health center.

COVID 19 VACCINATION STATUS

We are happy to inform our patients that all staff members at Maitland Dental have had at least one of our vaccinations.
Most of us have had the two doses, and in another month or so we will all have.
Yes, we know that vaccination isn't the total answer to the spread of Covid but it is part of the raft of measures that individuals need to take on board to mitigate the risk.
As yet it isn't mandatory for private dental practices to have staff vaccinated but we have taken this position because we believe it the socially responsible approach to take. And because we care about the health of our patients, and each other.

Covid has reared its ugly head again. We are on level 5 restrictions and are unable to see patients until Wednesday 28th of July at the earliest.
It’s obviously not good but let’s all do the right thing, follow the health advice and hopefully stop the spread of this disease.
My personal opinion is that vaccination is the way to go for most of us but accept there is some reservation.
Hope everyone stays safe and don’t get too stressed.

Dental Hygienist.

Patients sometimes ask why do they need to have a hygiene appointment or what is a dental hygienist?

The short answer is prevention is better than cure.

The long answer is that most of our dental problems and issues can be either completely prevented or markedly reduced by good oral hygiene. Decay is a big problem for many people and becomes more so as we get older and lose manual dexterity, take more medication, find our saliva flow reducing and our diet changing. Periodontal disease (disease affecting our gums and dentoalveolar bone) also becomes a greater concern over the years. And our mouths are inevitably more restored (fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, partial dentures) as we age. A clean mouth has less problems: less likely to have decay, reduced periodontal disease, and dental restorations last longer. Regular appointments with the dental hygienist can result in a healthier mouth overall, less decay so less treatment is required, reduced progression of periodontal disease, and restorative work (fillings etc) last longer. It makes a lot of sense.

I wonder how many went with the short answer, and how many struggled through the long answer? 😂

Renovations Update
Our new operatory is showing progress with the cabinetry in place and our Cerec Primescan being delivered on Tuesday. And on the 17th of December the dental chair will be installed.
We are on track for completion by the end of the year.
And yes, we are all pretty excited 😊

Well, that was weird.

Our 6 day lockdown lasted 3 days. And after having level 5 restrictions mandated on SA dental practices for 3 days we are back to business as usual.

But business as usual still means screening patients for COVID symptoms (elevated temperature, dry cough, tiredness, loss of taste & smell, sore throat) and international or national travel.

Level 5 Restrictions on Dental Treatment

We have been advised that as from 12.01am Thursday 19 November dental practices in South Australia are operating under level 5 restrictions. Essentially this means that we can’t provide anything near routine dental treatment. All we can do is triage patients and refer for management of severe dental or facial injury.

As soon as we are able to resume normal business we most surely will.
