Today our team had the privilege of delivering psychoeducation to the therapists at the Hand Therapy Centre in Maitland 🤍
We explored trauma and the complex ways physical and psychological trauma interact, including the origins of trauma, how it impacts the nervous system, and its effects on emotional, cognitive, and physical functioning. A key focus was understanding dissociation as a protective trauma response, how it can manifest as emotional numbing, detachment, memory gaps, shutdown, or feeling “disconnected” from the body and how we can support people through these experiences using trauma-informed strategies. We also discussed the role of evidence-based approaches such as EMDR therapy in safely processing trauma and supporting nervous system regulation.
Physiotherapists and occupational therapists play a vital role in trauma recovery, supporting body awareness, safety, regulation, and functional re-engagement. Their work is essential in helping clients rebuild trust in their bodies and restore meaningful participation in daily life.
We’re so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our allied health colleagues and provide truly interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary support.
