Today, the 9th day of the 9th month at 9:09am, we stand with families across NSW and recognise that expecting parents are committed to living alcohol free during pregnancy. We also acknowledged that for many parents they may not be aware that they are pregnant for some time and during this period there is increased risk of alcohol exposure for wannay. The clouds parted and the sun shone through for the Wollotuka 2025 Indigenous Scholars’ Breakfast on Wednesday the 13th of August. I was lucky enough to represent We Care and share the morning with UoN staff, scholarship winners and other business representatives.

Congrats Sebastian on being the recipient of We Care NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Psychology Scholarship. It was the highlight of my week meeting you and hearing about the goals and achievements of all the amazing scholarship winners.

On this day, let us remember that Indigenous peoples are actors of change, guardians of natural resources and carriers of unique worldviews, knowledge and skills. We must protect their traditions and ways of life – while respecting their rights.

This quote of Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, outlines International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples perfectly.

Have a fabulous day everyone

Let’s celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day with a reflection of the meaning behind this year’s theme - “Little footsteps, big future” which emphasizes the importance of culture, community and connection to country.

These were the same words for our Connecting Countries program that ran for three years, from 2022 to the end of 2024, involving both men and women programs. Reported outcomes included “increased peer and community-based relationships following the program, increased connection and belonging to their self, community and culture and an increased understanding of the structures within community that are available to support...”

May all children experience support that is linked with culture, community and connection to country when they work with our Matung Kunarr service. Our child and family services arm that provides more than just support and care, but also identity, resilience and recognition.
