What is after hours care? It is care provided when you access your GP outside of normal general practice opening hours and outside of hospital emergency departments for something that can’t wait for the next available GP appointment. We are looking to build an accessible and sustainable after-hours care program here at Mallacoota Medical Centre through collaboration with a telehealth service such as Northern Health Virtual ED. Before we can do that, however, we would like to hear your thoughts on after-hours care. Tell us what you think, by filling in the survey, linked above!

We are so proud of our previous GP Registrars. Dr. Mubashar Sherazi and Dr Emily Butlin who were awarded their postgraduate General Practitioner qualification "Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners" this week. Dr. Sherazi was also able to receive his GP Registrar of the Year award directly from the College. 👏👏👏
Dr Belal Hanifa has also completed his GP Registrar training and will recieve his Fellowship later in the year. For most doctors a College Fellowship is the culmination of at least (sometimes more) a decade of University Education.

We are so fortunate to be a teaching and learning Medical Practice and to have the services of highly educated and qualified medical professionals in our rural location.
Congratuations Mubashar, Emily and Belal 🎉 and all the best for the future 🎊

COVID information for Mallacoota

There have been at least 30 confirmed local COVID cases in Mallacoota since Christmas. With not much evidence of spread beyond social, workplace or household contacts.

So if you are a household contact please look at the checklist below to find out the correct way to safely leave your quarantine.
Unfortunately, the delay in testing results may increase your isolation time.

Remember that if you have been living with someone who has COVID there can be a 7 day delay in the development of your symptoms. Use a Rapid Antigen Test if you can, or get a PCR test and isolate until you have your result.

For everyone.
Avoid indoors and close social contact, maintain house-hold "bubbles" and follow the guidelines below. This will assist in limiting the impact of COVID in the community.

Our story

The Mallacoota Medical Centre is a family owned practice which was opened in Mallacoota by Dr. Gavin Le Sueur in 1989. Since that time Mallacoota residents and visitors have received their medical care from a small number of resident General Practitioners who have provided a high standard of personalised care across the full breadth of medical and health needs of their patients. The current GP Principal is Dr Sara Renwick-Lau, who has been a partner of the practice since 2008 and subsequently became the sole doctor in the practice in 2016.

The Mallacoota Medical Centre is now staffed by 2 receptionists, a practice manager a practice nurse and 2 Doctors.

The closest hospitals to Mallacoota are Orbost Hospital and Bega Hosptial (both 2 hours drive away). Due to the distance from other medical services, the Mallacoota Medical Centre by necessity provides a broad range of health services. As well as the usual health and medical care provided by other General Practices, the Mallacoota Medical Centre also provides “bush” services such as fish hook removals, limited emergency dentistry and stabilisation of patients with life-threatening illness before transport to hospital to name a few. Other more frequent and important services provided by the Medical Centre include assisting patients with logistics with referrals to distant specialists and allied health, developing increased telehealth consultation with specialists, advanced skin cancer treatments and care planning and co-ordinating complex care needs of patients, as well as the “old-fashioned” GP care, like advocacy for patients within the wider health system, Palliative Care in the home, home visits for those patients with mobility difficulties and “cradle-to-grave” care of the whole person.

The Mallacoota Medical Centre aims to be a place where patients can feel comfortable to access care from a team of familiar health professionals whose aim it is to respect the individual needs of their patients. Recognising the challenges of providing health care in a small remote town, the Mallacoota Medical Centre strives to achieve the best outcome for all patients, whether they are unwell, injured or hoping to maintain or improve their wellness.
