Contrary to what many people believe, anecdotal and clinical evidence show that massage is safe during and after pregnancy when administered by a trained professional.

✅ Anxiety, depression and lower back pain are common during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Non-pharmacologic treatments for these mental health symptoms are critically important during these periods. As a secondary effect to these improvements, massage has also been shown to reduce premature birth and low birthweight!

Today is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.

Did you know that massage therapy has been found to benefit pain, anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia patients?

This 2014 review showed that 5+ weeks of massage therapy had a positive outcome https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3930706/

This 2010 review suggests that 1-2 massage sessions per week are beneficial with painless massage and intensity being increased gradually in line with patients symptom picture https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20306046/

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) 2018 the total burden of musculoskeletal conditions was higher among women compared to men and generally increased with age to be highest among people aged 60–64.

✅ Massage therapy has shown to be efficacious in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, another of the ten most common general practice presentations, with participants showing significant improvements in the mean global WOMAC scores (Osteoarthritis Index), pain, stiffness and physical function domains, and in the visual analogue scale of pain assessment, range of motion in degrees, and time to walk 50 ft in seconds!

The Ottawa guidelines indicate that massage therapy is effective at providing pain relief and improving functional status in lower back pain as well as in providing short term improvement of sub-acute and chronic lower back pain symptoms and decreased disability immediately post treatment.

✅ Studies have found massage to be effective for persistent back pain and preliminary evidence suggests that massage may reduce the cost of care after an initial course of treatment.

👉 An RCT of 262 patients aged 20 to 70 with persistent back pain showed massage to provide long-lasting benefits, reduce medication use and lower the cost of subsequent care.

The integration of massage therapy into patient care has been shown to help prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain.

TRUTH: We have to get away from thinking that muscles work ALONE.

Movement is created by muscles working together in groups and in predictable orders. You can use this understanding to help us explain why an exercise is creating pain/tension in places we don't expect it to.

For example, to propel us forward when running we need to extend from our back hip. This should be a movement DOMINATED by our glute maximus. Unfortunately, many runners have weak glutes.

Your brain doesn't just say, "OH WELL...I GUESS WE WON"T BE RUNNING TODAY."

No, instead it follows a predictable pattern of asking friendly neighbor muscles to take on the role the glute.

PROBLEM: These muscles were not designed to take this job on!
