My clients are always so scared of this… 😱😰
It’s time we break the silence on prolapse - and start talking about it! Here are some facts you may not know:
⛓️💥 Vaginal prolapse happens when pelvic organs (like the bladder, uterus, or bowel) drop into the va**nal space due to weakened support structures.
🫶 It’s VERY common! ~1 in 2 women who’ve had a va**nal birth will have some degree of prolapse in their lifetime.
🩺 Symptoms: heaviness, dragging, bulging, difficulty inserting tampons, or feeling “something there.”
4️⃣ There are 4 different stages of prolapse.
🤷♀️ Prolapse is not always painful, many women have it without realising.
💪 Pelvic floor muscle training is first-line treatment and can prevent prolapse from worsening.
💩 Constipation and straining are big risk factors. Bowel care is key to prevention and management.
⏳Prolapse symptoms can fluctuate, often worse at the end of the day, after standing for long periods, or around your period.
👩⚕️Prolapse does NOT mean surgery is inevitable, 80-90% of women manage well with physio and lifestyle strategies.
☺️ Support pessaries (small devices inserted in the va**na) can be used alongside physiotherapy to provide extra support.
🏋️♀️ Heavy lifting without support can worsen symptoms. Always exhale and engage your pelvic floor when lifting.
🏃♀️ Weight management and regular exercise can help reduce pressure on the pelvic floor.
🔬Hormonal changes at menopause or post-partum/breastfeeding (drop in oestrogen) can increase prolapse symptoms due to tissue thinning.
🏋️♀️ High-impact exercise isn’t “off limits” but it may need modification. Low-impact options like Pilates, swimming, or cycling can feel better.
🩹 Prolapse can come back after surgery if the underlying pelvic floor issues aren’t addressed. Rehab is essential!
👯♀️ You’re not alone. Prolapse is common, treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about — the earlier you seek help, the better the outcomes.
