Caring for Country πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸŒ±πŸ–€

Teaching our children πŸ§’πŸ½ πŸ‘§πŸΌ πŸ™ŒπŸ½ about Country 🌏 and its physical and spiritual significance is a vital rite of passage. Country encompasses the land meeting the 🌈sky, waterways, hills, mountains, riversπŸ”οΈ and all living things πŸ¦‡πŸ•·οΈπŸπŸ¦‹πŸŒπŸ¦†πŸΈπŸ¦‰πŸœπŸ¦ŽπŸžin between.

We must ensure Gunimaa, Mother Earth, can continue to sustain πŸƒπŸ«ΆπŸΏ our way of life.

At Yula-Punaal, we strive to do just that, sharing our beautiful and sacred land with all its πŸ‘£πŸπŸ¦ŽπŸ¦‹πŸŒ±πŸ¦‰πŸ¦‡inhabitants.

Recently our young ones πŸ§‘πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸΌπŸ‘©πŸΎπŸ§’πŸ½ demonstrated valuable cultural practises and the importance of caring for our waterways by cleaning the debris and unclogging the creek 🌊They realised their contribution and actions served a greater purpose. Watching, feeling and hearing the creek flow allowed the children to truly feel the spirit of Gunimaa…to connect to Country.
We all have a responsibility to ensure we Care for Country. πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸƒπŸ«ΆπŸΏπŸŒ±πŸ–€

Welcome to 2026!!!πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ–€πŸ₯°β€οΈπŸ™ŒπŸ½

This week, in partnership with Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Services, we conducted our inaugural Wiliguwa On-Country Vacation Care program for our children. πŸ§’πŸ½πŸ§‘πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸΌπŸ‘©πŸΎ

The children were fully immersed and eagerly anticipated returning to country. The week was filled with engaging bush walks πŸ‘£, regeneration of the creek, the preparation of Johnny cakes, arts and crafts, the creation of Grenville and lemon myrtle 🌱 tea and body scrub, and the participation in traditional games and of cause the so call Yowie sighting 😳🫣.

A notable highlight was the Web of Knowledge activity, β€œLets Have a Yarn with Yarn,” 🧢 which centred on the children’s experiences and enjoyment of the vacation care program. What they learnt and were the can do and be better.

Surprisingly, the children’s responses were both humorous and profound, reflecting their honest assessments of areas for improvement.

The most significant incentive was the contributions of our three junior leaders, Kira, Cooper, and Kyla, who donned yellow fluorescent vests and demonstrated exceptional leadership this week under the mentor of young Davey Scholes.

We would also like to acknowledge and say thank you all the EDAS staff who assisted with supervision, especially Ryan Montgomery. This week couldn’t work without you all. πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

A Dedication to Aunty Louise Campbell πŸ™πŸΎπŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ™πŸΎ

In a world where greatness is often measured by humanitarian impact, power, and wealth, some individuals redefine success.πŸ‘£πŸ™ŒπŸ½

Aunty Louise Campbell, an extraordinary woman, exemplifies selflessness, dedication, and service to others. She stood for so many things.βš–οΈπŸ‘©πŸ½β€βš–οΈ

A remarkable woman, Aunty Louise hs left an indelible mark on all who knew her. From an early age, she displayed compassion and a desire to make a difference. This empathy shaped her path and led her to become a beacon of hope for many. πŸ‘£

As a young woman, a member of the stolen generation, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, seeking knowledge and wisdom to better serve her community. Education was her key to unlocking doors of opportunity for herself and others. She became a teacher, mentor, and leader, shaping the minds of future generations, regardless of race, gender, or her Catholic faith.

With compassion and resilience, she ventured into law, politics, the United Nations, native title, land rights, and social justice. πŸ™ŒπŸ½βš–οΈπŸ™ŒπŸ½

Louise is one of the founding members of Yula-Punaal Education and Healing Aboriginal Corporation. Along with Tammy and Victor Wright, they secured a 50-acre property in 2003 at the foot of the Wattagan Mountains.

Louise and Tammy achieved much together, from speaking at state, national, and international forums to their love of travel and their efforts to make a difference in a controlling western world.
Louise’s voice and recognition will live on through Tammy as her voice in Yula-Punaal, the Catholic, Awabakal, and Darkinjung communities. πŸ–€πŸ₯°β€οΈ

Louise’s dedication to community-led initiatives and advocacy has brought lasting change, empowering many. Her unwavering commitment inspires all who have worked with her.
Let’s honour Louise’s remarkable life by emulating her compassion, resilience, and service. πŸ™πŸΎβ€οΈ

Let’s strive to make a difference in others’ lives, just as she did. Her legacy will forever be etched in communitiwa far and wide, especially in Aboriginal communities, and her impact will continue for generations.

We will miss her physical presence, but we know she will be with us in spirit. May we have comfort knowing she is with her family in the Dreaming and may she rest in peace. πŸ™πŸΎπŸ–€πŸ₯°β€οΈπŸ™πŸΎ

As we come into Spring, new life is beginning πŸͺΎπŸͺ΄πŸŒΎ
And add a rainbow 🌈 or two.

Our fingerlimes are in abundant and are looking great!

Yula-Punaal has a new garden with a range of native plants, flowers and fruits. We also have an influx of our native bee, helping with the pollination.

Yula-Punaal implemented the third round of our On-Country Vacation Care program during the second week of the school holidays. πŸ‘§πŸΎπŸ§’πŸ½πŸ‘¦πŸ»πŸ‘©πŸ» πŸ‘¦πŸΌπŸ‘©πŸΎπŸ‘§πŸΌ

The children participated in their first First Aid workshop, which focused on the protocol for 🐍snake bites. While the kids found it entertaining, they also grasped the seriousness of the workshop, its purpose, and intent.

Cultural activities included Songlines, working with clay and ochre, making damper, fried scones, and lemon 🌱myrtle cake. Our children collaborated on a project using stringy bark to create a bark canoe and added coconut palm leaves to the Gunyah using stringy bark rope.

True to the spirit of our ancestors, we were blessed with the presence of kangaroos 🦘 wallabies, their joeys, and an echidna πŸ¦” . The children were fully immersed in the program.

On the final day, our newly appointed Junior Leader, Kira, developed and delivered an impressive trivia game with dance πŸ•Ί breaka in between. We are extremely proud of the leadership Kira demonstrated throughout the week. The kids showed great respect towards her. πŸ–€πŸ₯°β€οΈ
