✅What are the new Aged Care Quality Standards?

From 1 November, the existing standards will be strengthened to ensure aged care is safer, more consistent, and more focused on what matters most to older people.

There are still 8 standards, but they’ve been made clearer with stronger expectations for providers and staff.

The Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards bring a sharper focus to the daily experiences of people receiving aged care.

These changes ensure that aged care is more personal, respectful, and consistent every day.

🗨Let’s talk about rights in aged care.

From 1 November, every person receiving aged care will be supported by a formal Statement of Rights under the new Aged Care Act.

These rights include:
✅The right to be treated with dignity and respect
✅The right to feel safe and heard
✅The right to access quality care that supports your wellbeing and independence

At Coolibah Care, we’re committed to upholding these values every day and we welcome the clearer protections and stronger expectations this change brings.

What is the new Aged Care Act and why is it important?

From 1 November, Australia’s aged care system will be guided by new legislation that places the rights of older people at the centre of care.

This new Aged Care Act includes:
✔ A clear Statement of Rights for all aged care recipients
✔ Greater accountability for providers
✔ A stronger focus on dignity, respect and person-centred care

The goal is to ensure every older person receives care that reflects their values and preferences with transparency and fairness at every step.

🏠Big changes are coming to aged care and here’s what you need to know.

From 1 November 2025, three major aged care reforms will take effect across Australia. These changes aim to make aged care services safer, more consistent, and more person-centred - whether you receive care at home or in a residential setting.

What’s changing?
✅ A new Support at Home Program – replacing Home Care Packages
✅ A new Aged Care Act – placing older people’s rights at the centre of care
✅ Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards – clearer expectations and improved safety

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing updates to help you understand each of these reforms and how Coolibah Care is supporting a smooth and informed transition.

Today we celebrate International Older Persons Day!

It’s an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary wisdom, resilience, and love our older generation shares with us every single day.

At Coolibah Care, we are privileged to walk alongside our residents and clients, learning from their stories and celebrating the richness of their lives. From recipes passed down, to tales told around the table, to small acts of kindness - these gifts shape who we are today.

Let’s celebrate the incredible older people in our lives - not just today, but every day.

We’re delighted to share a heartfelt poem written by one of our very own village residents. Through beautiful words and gentle reflection, they remind us of the importance of gratitude, kindness, and saying “thank you” before the moment passes.

It’s a wonderful reminder that the simplest words can carry the deepest meaning. 💛

Important Things

There are many words inside my head
Important things that go unsaid
And finally, they drift away
Into the ocean of thoughts each day.

The people who invoke these words
May never know things, seldom heard
Of how appreciative we are
Of their kind deeds that stretch so far.

How often do we let them know
That we appreciate their kindness so
They don’t feel it’s all done in vain,
Especially deeds done time and again.

So, let me take this time to say
Those words before they slip away,
A huge thanks from me to you,
I truly appreciate all you do!’

Gratitude turns what we have into enough.

On World Gratitude Day, we’re encouraged to pause and reflect on the good in our lives - from the big milestones to the small, everyday kindnesses that often go unspoken.

It might be the neighbour who always waves hello, a friend who remembers your favourite tea, or a nurse who offers comfort with both skill and warmth. Gratitude not only lifts the spirits of those we thank, it boosts our own wellbeing too!

Every September, Dementia Action Week shines a spotlight on the impact dementia has on individuals, families, and communities, and what we can do to create a society that is more inclusive and supportive.

This year’s theme, “Nobody can do it alone”, reminds us that living well with dementia is possible when we work together - whether that’s as family, friends, neighbours, carers, or community members.

World Alzheimer’s Day is on Sunday, 21 September, providing an opportunity to recognise the challenges of dementia and celebrate the strengths, stories, and resilience of those affected.
