We are fortunate to live in a time where there are so many forms of assistive technology available to support children with reading and writing difficulties — and the list keeps growing!

Some of our favourite tools include reader pens like the C-Pen, dictate functions, and read-aloud features. These tools empower children to become more independent in their reading and writing, boosting both confidence and autonomy. Here’s some more detail about each one:

🟢 C-Pen: This handheld device scans and reads aloud printed text, helping children better understand written material without getting stuck on difficult words. By providing access to more content, it enhances learning across all subjects and supports vocabulary and language development📖
🟢 Dictation (Speech-to-Text): Struggling with writing? Dictation functions on computers and phones allow kids to speak their ideas, which are then automatically converted into text. This helps bypass spelling and handwriting challenges, enabling them to focus more on expressing their ideas clearly and creatively! 🎤📝
🟢 Read-Aloud Features: Available on many devices and apps, these features read digital text aloud, helping students focus on comprehension instead of decoding. They can also be used to help children review and edit their own writing! 👂📚

If you think these tools could make a positive difference for your child, please speak with your speech pathologist to explore them further 💚

🤔Is it b or d…?

We’ve heard this question from our FSLL clients in the past, but not anymore!

A few months ago, we shared an amazing strategy, “Use Your Mouth Shape” to help kids distinguish between ‘b’ and ‘d’. We provided a free resource too! Check the next image for a quick refresher, or for a more in-depth explanation, watch Soundality ’s video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Czzu79wgc

We’ve since created a package of activities to support our clients that find “b” and “d” tricky, and now it’s ready to share with you!
It includes:
✅40 activity sheets (available in colour and black + white)
✅Fun and easy-to-follow activities
✅Sound, word and sentence level exercises for ‘b’ and ‘d’
✅Visual supports to ‘use your mouth shape’ and orthographic mapping cues

The activity sheets are great for:

Treating lisps is one of the many things we do at FSLL! 💚

❔But what exactly is a lisp? A lisp is a speech sound error that typically occurs on 's' and 'z' sounds when the tongue is not in the correct position to produce the sound.

There are two main types of lisps:
👅An interdental lisp happens when the tongue protrudes between the teeth during the production of 's' or 'z' sounds, often making them sound more like 'th'. This type of speech sound error is a normal part of speech development and typically resolves by around 4 and a half years old.
💨Another type of lisp is a lateral lisp, where the airflow goes down the sides of the tongue instead of through the middle, resulting in sounds that may sound "slushy". This type of lisp can affect various sounds such as 's', 'z', 'ch', 'sh', and 'j'. Lateral lisps are not a typical part of speech sound development at any age.

We hope this information is helpful! If you have any concerns about your child's speech sound development after reading this post, we encourage you to speak to a speech pathologist 🤍🗣️

Does your child get confused between similar looking letters such as b, d, p, or q? Then continue reading this post for a wonderful tip that we learned from Soundality !

There are many strategies out there to help children with “b” and “d”, including using hands, pictures or words. However, when using these strategies in the past, we have found that our clients are often just as confused and are still not reliably differentiating between the two letters. 🤔

That was until we came across this amazing strategy…

👄“Use your mouth shape”👄

Children can focus on the shape their mouth makes to help them determine the sound that is associated with the letters "b” and "d”. 🗣️

➖When we say "b", our lips start together forming a line. Therefore, when we write "b", we write the line first, or when we see the letter with the line first, we know it is "b".
⭕️ When we say "d", our lips start round forming a circle (you can exaggerate this shape to support learning). Therefore, when we write "d", we write the circle first, or when we see the letter with the circle first, we know it is "d".

For a wonderful in depth explanation of this strategy, you can check out Soundality's video following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Czzu79wgc

‼️And in other fantastic news.. we have a free resource that we have created for our clients that find “b” and “d” tricky, and we want to share it with you!! This resource has a range of visuals that display the “use your mouth shape” strategy. ‼️

Would you like extra material for your child to read at home but find that many of your books have words that are too tricky.. that they cannot sound out to read? 📚

Decodable readers are a wonderful resource to support children to develop their literacy skills.
✅ They teach children to use their letter-sound knowledge and blending skills to accurately read text.
❌ Rather than “guessing” words based on where they are in a sentence, the visual appearance of the word, or by looking at the picture.

And the wonderful news is that there are a number of websites that have great decodable readers.. for free! Check them out below:

Before you begin to use these resources, please speak to your child’s speech pathologist or teacher about:
📖 What level or set would be most appropriate for your child.
📖 Any tips or strategies that they use to support your child to read.

For suggested activities that you can complete with decodable readers, please see our post from September 2022 which has plenty of ideas! 💡

Have you ever wondered what you can do at home to support your child’s pronunciation of sounds and words? 🗣️

We are here to help you! Here are some tips that you can try:
🟢 Encourage your child to look at your mouth and say the tricky sound/word slowly for them to watch e.g. “Watch my mouth! This is a 'sssuuunn'.”
🟢 Explain to your child what you are doing with your mouth and see if they can copy you e.g. “I am putting my teeth on my lips to make the ‘f’ sound like this ‘fffire’. Can you give it a go?”
🟢 Repeat back your child’s words/sentences with correct pronunciation e.g. If your child says “I love basghetti”.. you could recast by saying “I love spaghetti too!”
🟢 Speak about the sounds in words to increase your child’s awareness of them (particularly for any sounds that are tricky) e.g. “I love the shell you found! 'Shell' starts with the ‘sh’ sound.”

We hope these tips are helpful for you! Speak to your speech pathologist if you would like some more specific ideas to support your child 💚

Here is a tip that family members, educators or other professionals can use with children to support their speech and language, and that is RECASTING! 💬

This is something that you may already be doing without noticing it, but bringing your attention to what it is and why it’s beneficial may encourage you to continue using it with more intent! 🧐

Recasting is when you repeat back what a child has just said, correcting any errors ☑️ This enables the child to hear and learn about how they can improve the way they said a word or sentence for the future 👂📈 You may put some extra stress or emphasis on the sound or word you have corrected, so that it stands out to the child 📢 There is no expectation that the child then repeats the word or sentence correctly.

Let’s look at some examples of recasting:

💬A child says “boy riding bike”.. you could recast by saying “yes the boy is riding a bike!”

💬 A child says “I love basghetti”.. you could recast by saying “I love spaghetti too!”

💬 A child says “he is brushing him hair”.. you could recast by saying “yes he is brushing his hair!”

💬 A child says “look at the bird up on the tree stick”.. you could recast by saying “I see the bird on the tree branch!”

💬 A child says “she swimmed so well in the race” you could recast by saying “yes she swam really well!”

Try this out with your child and see how it goes! 🤍

Today marks another day that is special to us at Flourish SLL.. it is ! 🗣

But what is DLD I hear you ask?

🙋‍♂️ DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder which is a disability that affects somebody’s ability to express themselves using language or understand the language of others.
🙋‍♂️It is often a “hidden” but common disability affecting 1 in 14 people.

🌱This year, the theme of DLD day is “Growing with DLD” 🌱

DLD is a lifelong and permanent disability that cannot be outgrown, but with the right help, people with DLD can… flourish! 🌿The amount and type of support required can differ between individuals, but often includes regular speech pathology intervention, teaching communication partners to support interactions and adjustments at school to support learning.

For more information about DLD, please see uploaded 10 facts about DLD or visit https://radld.org. ⬅️👩‍💻
