Yep, change that habit!

Why? Drinking coffee on an empty stomach first thing in the morning can interfere with your cortisol levels, mess with your circadian rhythm (sleep habits) and create blood sugar irregularities.
It can actually leave you feeling a little more stressed, anxious and tired later on in the day.

Instead, as most people wake dehydrated, start your morning with a glass of water and eat a protein filled breakfast before that cuppa ☕️
Cue reel song - 🎵I can be your new addiction 😉)

The evidence to date demonstrates poor nutrition can contribute to the severity of ADHD symptoms. Therefore, by addressing one’s nutritional intake may improve symptoms and mental health.

Clinician Tips
* Encourage the family to eat a wholefoods diet. This includes a diversity of - vegetables, protein, whole grains, fruit and healthy fats. Eating "clean" decreases processed foods that do not add nutritional value. It also naturally eliminates additives, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, sugars and preservatives that may contribute to ADHD symptoms.
* Eating wholefoods every 3-4 hours can help to balance blood sugars and regulate emotions. Make sure protein is optimal throughout the day.
* Deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals may affect concentration and neural activity. Get a bloods or hair test to check your levels
* Lastly, consider the gut and absorption. If the digestive system is not optimal, key nutrients will not be utilised effectively. By improving the gut can have significant benefits.

It makes sense that if your body is low in important neural functioning nutrients, it won’t function optimally!
Several studies have demonstrated reduced vitamins and minerals in those with ADHD.
These include : Iron, Magnesium, B Vitamins, Vitamin D, and Zinc.
A nutrient filled diverse diet is always the first point of call, however sometimes supplementation is required to optimize levels quickly. Then we can maintain them with the nourishment of food. ✨

Negative ions are invisible calming molecules that we inhale in certain environments ~ Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the chemical serotonin, helping to improve moods and relieve stress.
Your daily reminder to get outside and breathe 🌞✨

Having a lovely break in the N.T with the family. I’ll be back in the clinic in 2 weeks time. 😊

Are you eating plenty of foods daily that contain these essential vitamins and minerals 👇🏽?

If you are not, you body may lack important nutrients to assist with the production of progesterone.

Check in with the wholefoods you ate throughout today - Veg, seeds, nuts, protein either from meat sources or lentils and legumes, good fat sources like avocado, whole grains and fruit?

Are you practising stress reducing techniques?

Your body will preferentially make cortisol over progesterone if it’s constantly exposed to stress. If you’re always running on adrenaline your body may not be producing enough progesterone.

Try mindfulness, yoga, and deep breathing throughout your day to assist the body ‘out’ of adrenaline mode.

Are you getting enough sleep?

Regularly getting a full 8 hours of rest a night may help the body regulate hormone levels.

Make sure to avoid stimulants after noon, avoid blue light before bed, and work with your natural circadian rhythm during the day.

Picky eating can be due to a range of issues, and often one approach won’t fix the problem.

As parents you can create the 3 p’s as a foundation for a healthy diet
- Persistence
- Patience
- Positivity

However, you may have found this has made minimal changes to their tendencies?

Swipe 👉 to see a few of the different issues a Nutritionist may assist you with.

Other practitioners that you may find helpful for your child’s eating habits include an OT if their tendencies are due to sensory issues or a psychotherapist for behavioural challenges.

Let’s Talk Gut : Microbiome

When looking into a Microbiome test ( stool sample ) we do more than investigate the types of bacteria and parasites present in your bowel.

In these particular tests I’m looking at immune dysfunction, digestive function and intestinal hyperpermiability AS well as the bacteria and parasites present.

Both of these clients presented with bloating, irregular bowel movements, fatigue and an ‘unwell’ feeling. Different diagnostics leads to different treatment plans.. there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach with Nutritional and Naturopathic treatments.

A little look into diagnostics...
SIgA:
represents the first line immune defense of the gut. Elevated levels are associated with an upregulated immune response.
sIgA ‘tags' food as acceptable, so low sIgA can lead to increased sensitivity to food.
Several studies link stress and emotionality with levels of sIgA. Production is adversely affected by stress, which is mediated by cortisol levels. Hence sIgA levels may be associated with sub optimal adrenal output.

ELEVATED STEATOCRIT:
The presence of steatocrit is an indirect indicator of incomplete fat digestion

Zonulin:
Zonulin release can be "overstimulated" by certain external factors to cause opening of tight junctions of the gut wall leading to intestinal hyperpermeability or "leaky gut".

Children with iron deficiency anaemia can present with fatigue, irritability, pica, picky eating, decreased activity, poor concentration and poor school performance.

Possible causes of iron deficiency in children may include :
Inadequate dietary iron
Consuming too much dairy/milk
Rapid growth period
Parasitic infections
Poor absorption in the gut : Celiac disease / IBD / IBS
Helicobactor pylori infection.
Lack of facilitation vitamins - B12, folate and zinc.

Your practitioner may order blood tests and stool samples to distinguish whether an underlying issue is present.

Making dietary changes, screening for allergies/ intolerance and choosing a good quality iron supplement are also important steps to rectify your little ones iron levels.
