Manjimup Medical Centre is recognised for commitment to safe, high-quality patient care on 1st of April 2026 by AGPAL- Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited

Patients at Manjimup Medical Centre can feel confident they are receiving safe, high-quality care following the practice’s recent achievement of accreditation under the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practices.

The accreditation, awarded by Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) – Australia’s leading not-for-profit provider of general practice accreditation services – recognises the practice’s commitment to maintaining robust systems that support patient safety, clinical governance and continuous improvement.

Manjimup Medical Centre Practice Principal Dr Casper Murove said, achieving accreditation reflects the team’s shared commitment to delivering the highest standard of care and continuously strengthens systems and outcomes for the Manjimup community.

“Providing safe, high-quality care for our patients is always our top priority,” Dr. John Rosser Davies said.

“Accreditation encourages us to regularly review and strengthen how we operate as a practice – from how we manage patient safety and infection control, to how we support our staff and improve the services we provide.”

AGPAL Chair, Mr Gary Smith AM, said accreditation provides independent confirmation that a practice meets nationally recognised standards for quality and safety.

“Achieving accreditation demonstrates that a practice has strong systems in place to support safe and effective patient care,” Mr Smith said.

“It reflects the commitment of the entire practice team to maintaining high standards and continually improving the services they provide to their community.”

To achieve accreditation, practices undergo an independent on-site assessment carried out by an experienced AGPAL assessment team against the RACGP Standards. This process provides a structured, independent evaluation of how systems, governance and clinical practices operate in day-to-day care.

During the accreditation process, practices demonstrate how they manage critical safety and care systems such as vaccine storage and handling, infection prevention and control, regular staff training, equipment maintenance and emergency preparedness.

The AGPAL Accredited Certificate displayed at the practice signals to patients that Manjimup Medical Centre has met Australia’s national benchmark for quality and safety in general practice.

For the Manjimup community, this provides reassurance that their local practice has been independently assessed and meets nationally recognised standards for patient care and safety.

When AMA (WA) member Dr John Rosser Davies first arrived in Manjimup in 1978 as a locum, he wasn’t planning to stick around for the long term. But the long term certainly found him. He found a community that became home—and a career that would help redefine rural medicine in Western Australia.

Dr Davies has received a Rural Health Long Service Award, recognising an extraordinary 50-year career that has spanned obstetrics, anaesthetics, surgery, emergency medicine and aged care—he is recognised as the only rural doctor in Western Australia to have provided surgical, anaesthetic and obstetric services concurrently.

As Manjimup’s sole obstetrician for nearly two decades, he delivered more than 1,000 babies, often later caring for those same children as adults.

What an inspiration it is! Thank you, Dr. John Rosser Davies, for your extraordinary 50 years of dedicated service to the rural communities of Western Australia. Team Manjimup Medical Centre would like to sincerely thank Rural Health West for recognizing his remarkable commitment and contributions at this Year's WA Rural Health Long Service Award.

At this year’s WA Rural Health Long Service Awards, we proudly recognised Dr John Rosser Davies for an extraordinary 50 years of service to rural Western Australia.

When John arrived in Manjimup in 1978, it was meant to be temporary. Instead, it became a lifetime of care.

Over five decades, he has delivered more than 1,000 babies, supported generations of families and pioneered home-based palliative care in his community. He remains the only rural doctor in WA to have provided anaesthetic, obstetric and surgical services concurrently.

Fifty years of dedication to one town is more than service, it’s legacy.

Please join us in celebrating this remarkable milestone.

Meet our Local Legend, Dr. Davies!
Thank you to ABC Southwest for exclusively covering the story of Dr. Davies's contribution to the community.
And our team would like to express our heartfelt thank you to our community members for the love and support that keeps our legend shining.

Meet this week's Local Legend🏆

In 1978, Dr John Rosser Davies turned up in Manjimup as a temporary locum but had no idea that his connection to Manjimup would last a lifetime. Next month he'll be recognised for 50 years of service.

Dr Davies told Stan Shaw on ABC South West Breakfast when he arrived in Manjimup the region had a thriving timber industry with lots of young people starting families.

“It was a lovely town and serviced six active timber towns, full of young people working physically, having babies and injuring themselves," he said.

“Manjimup was really humming – we were in the theatre quite often doing anaesthetic operations, emergency work plus the office GP.”

Despite the challenges of the early days, he stayed and fell in love with the region and has built an impressive resume.

Dr Davies is recognised as the only rural doctor in WA to have provided surgical, anaesthetic, and obstetric services concurrently.

In 2024, he was awarded 'GP of the Year' at the WA Rural Health Excellence Awards.

Not only did he deliver many babies in the region, Dr Davies was also recognised for pioneering home-based palliative care long before it became widely recognised in Australia.

As Manjimup's only obstetrician for 19 years, he's delivered close to 1500 babies, often later caring for those same children as adults and sometimes delivering their children too.

“I think we started delivering babies of babies back in about the late 1990s and that’s a very nice experience.”
