Think buying organic for your baby is nonsense? Here are 3 reasons why you should -
🌱
1. YOUR BABY’S SKIN IS MORE PERMEABLE - Your baby’s skin is far more delicate than that of an adults. It is thinner and more permeable which allows for more chemicals and substances to pass through. Unlike adults, babies skin have fewer elastic fibres and the layers (epidermis and dermis) which are not yet fully attached. Additionally, the pH of our skin is almost neutral at birth and gradually becomes more acidic as we age - a more acidic pH allows for more protection. Non-organic cotton is one of the most highly sprayed crops in the world - this includes both herbicides and pesticides. But the problem doesn’t stop here. The manufacturing of cotton requires many more chemicals, including bleach. Synthetic fabrics have plastics, petrochemicals and many more chemicals which have been found to be linked with hormonal imbalances and endocrine disruption. This doesn’t end at clothing, this includes any products you use on yourself or your baby.
🌱
2. BABIES CAN SLEEP UP TO 18 HOURS A DAY - Conventional mattresses have been found to contain a variety of chemicals such as polyurethane foam, a highly flammable material. To enable the passing of safety standards, mattresses containing this chemical must be sprayed with flame-retardant chemicals. In time, these chemicals leak out of the mattress - a process called ‘off-gassing’. If your baby is sleeping up to 18 hours a day, he or she is absorbing these chemicals through the skin and inhaling via the mouth and nasal passages. Similar to non-organic clothing, these chemicals have been found to cause hormonal imbalances, neurological disorder and infertility in later life.

3. ORGANIC DOESN’T MEAN EXPENSIVE - A number of mainstream brands are starting to introduce organic cotton ranges such as Target, Bonds and Country Road and for clothing stores who specialise in organic clothing (a little more expensive), they have sales many times a year. You can create a chemical free environment for your baby without breaking the bank.
