Brain function and oral health

Periodontitis is a severe gum disease caused by lots of types of bacteria leading to inflammation. Because of this, it is thought to contribute to overall body inflammation. There are early links suggesting that this severe gum disease may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.
This is due to:

1. Bacteria traveling from the mouth to the brain
2. Overall increase in inflammation

Pregnancy & Oral Health

There is early evidence supporting the association between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth, low birth weight and preeclampsia.
There are several factors proposed to explain the association including:

1. Inflammatory mediators
2. Oral bacterial dissemination

Diabetes and oral health!

There is increasing evidence of a two-way relationship between gum disease and diabetes where not only does diabetes increase an individual’s risk of developing severe gum disease, but the gum disease may negatively affect blood sugar levels.

Other than severe gum disease, the issues in the mouth associated with diabetes can include:
* Dental decay
* A decrease in saliva production causing a dry mouth
* Yeast and fungal infections
* Delayed or poor healing of wounds within the mouth
* Difficulty tasting foods

Lungs & oral health

Periodontitis and respiratory diseases share common risk factors including smoking, obesity and diabetes. There is early evidence supporting the association between periodontitis and some common respiratory diseases – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and COVID-19.
There are several hypotheses for the association between periodontitis and respiratory diseases:

1. Micro aspiration of oral bacteria into the lower airways
2. Systemic elevation of inflammatory markers
Evidence is emerging for oral bacteria being a risk factor for aspiration pneumonia.

Heart diseases and oral health!

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases (ACVD) encompasses a wide range of conditions including ischaemic cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease and peripheral arterial disease. Evidence has shown that periodontitis is associated with significant sub-clinical atherosclerosis. There is now also robust evidence linking periodontitis with ACVD.

The mechanisms by which this occurs are:

I. Bacteraemia
II. Elevation of systemic inflammation

❌🛑 Va**ng 🛑 ❌

❌🛑 Va**ng 🛑 ❌

Fascinating and random encounter
On a recent holiday I met a family whose patriarch is an executive at one of the big 4 to***co companies. We tripped over this being the case as we brought up va**ng.
He explained his company had been researching this for years and had brought products to market. However they recently decided to close their whole va**ng business down. The reasons for this were as follows:
1. Va**ng is more addictive than ci******es
2. Va**ng leads to more consumption of product than ci******es
Now if you’re like me, these 2 sound like great things for a consumer product and it’s sales. And they are. So what’s the catch?
Number 3.
3. They can not deliver a safe product at a price point that generates profits. The cost of doing so is 3x the price of va**ng products coming from a certain country.
And….
4. They don’t want to be in the va**ng space because the cheap product coming in, their scientists have analysed it, and they have no idea what’s in these imported products.
Even their own manufacturing was outsourced to the same country and despite stipulating their recipie, their end product had things in it that their scientists couldn’t work out.
They simply didn’t want to be in the va**ng space because it wasn’t profitable AND they couldn’t be certain the end product was what they thought is was.
So if you know anyone that vapes, they may be interested to learn that not even a big cigarette company will touch them. Surely that’s saying something?
