The monthly food as medicine post for October ostentatiously brings us up to O!
And O is for Oats 🥣
These versatile grains are loaded with belly-filling goodness, guaranteed to fuel your busy schedule and nourish your gut bugs!

Your gut microbiota will love the fermentable fibre content of oats, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids and reducing the risk of inflammatory diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

Oats also contain beta-glucan, a beneficial fibre that aids in cholesterol modulation. Research shows that just 6 weeks of consuming 80g of oats daily significantly reduces total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and non-HDL cholesterol.

There's a squillion ways to include oats in your daily diet...
- try blitzing into a flour for your weekend pancakes or school lunch box pikelets
- soak overnight in your favourite milk and added fruit, nuts and seeds (or try a carrot cake style recipe: www.wholefully.com/carrot-cake-overnight-oats-recipe - yum!)
- add to your apple crumble topping
- bake some good ol' ANZAC biccies
- gently toast in the oven with chopped dates, dried fruit, shredded coconut, aaaaalllll the nuts and seeds stirred in with some honey and make a gourmet granola! Serve with your favourite yoghurt and berries for a scrumptious dessert or sweet breakfast.
What other ideas can you come up with?

Cholesterol levels can be well-managed with the consumption of high fibre diets and the inclusion of oats - but sometimes additional support may be warranted. If you've had some wonky cholesterol results lately, and would like to address your levels holistically, reach out to book a consult. I take a multi-directional approach with consideration of liver health, digestive function, diet and lifestyle factors and tailor personalised strategies that are appropriate for YOU!

Feeling bloated — again?
It’s one of those annoying symptoms that can sneak into your day and leave you feeling uncomfortable, heavy, and frustrated. But bloating isn’t just part of getting older or being a woman or something you should have to live with...

It's time to beat the bloat!

There are many possible culprits — from how you eat and what you eat, to gut bacteria imbalances, food intolerances, sluggish or poor digestion, and even the effect of stress.

Instead of throwing money at various gut powders and probiotics, or trialling super restrictive diets to ease your symptoms, it’s time to dig deeper and take a targeted and individualised approach.
Your body is giving you clues — you just need to know how to read them.

Let's work together and help you uncover what’s really behind your bloating so you can get back to feeling light, comfortable, and confident in your body again.

It's been a while since I've been able to share some wisdom, inspo, and nutritional advice here... And if I'm totally honest - it's been a rough ride for me lately.

Ever felt like sometimes your life just gets hijacked?
Completely taken over by a flurry of events that have you running about like a headless chook, organising everyone else, and leaving little time for yourself?

That's been me the last few weeks.
Although not totally relevant to nutritional medicine, I reckon the 'fall out' of the recent chaos I've had is likely relatable and speaks to the lifestyle side of things - and let's face it, lifestyle has a major impact on food choices and overall health outcomes.

Aged care.
If you've had to deal with the process of getting a loved one into aged care, you will probably understand the ordeal I've endured. My 91 year grandfather, my Opa, is ready to move into a facility to receive the extra care he needs as moves out of his independent living arrangement. At the same time this decision was made, his bladder cancer returned, and surgery was scheduled just like last time.

We engaged an agent to assist with the process, and organised the assessment to get the paperwork in order for application to suitable facilities. Long story short, there was a lot of miscommunication which resulted in the assumption he was looking for short term, palliative care (and the cost or location didn't matter), there was misunderstanding of the financial side of things resulting in a lot of stress and panic about the prospect of finding somewhere affordable, and there was a huge mistake made with the assessment which determined the need for an excessive level of care which would have restricted my grandfather's freedom and quality of life. (To give you an idea, he currently sits on YouTube most of the day, searching up all and sundry - from wood working to magnet fishing! And he has taken the bus and train to get himself to hospital appointments if family aren't available to help - he's 91 and an absolute rockstar!)

With the disastrous debacle exponentially worsening day by day, I swooped on in and diligently got myself up to speed with all things Aged Care and resolved each issue one by one, including having the assessment revised (something that is apparently unheard of!?)

But this kind of exercise doesn't happen overnight. It was long and drawn out. Dealing with government departments, agents, assessors, and I even enlisted the help of my local member of parliament (who was fabulous but the way!)

This was an all consuming project.
All while also running a thriving clinic and supporting my lovely clients.
You know what suffered though?
Me!

Meals were skipped.
Takeaway had a much bigger presence in my week.
Sleep was affected.
Stress levels sky-rocketed and I struggled to unwind.
My mood dropped.
My potty mouth expanded 🫢

But do you know what?
We must acknowledge that sometimes, life happens (usually that's a different word).

And we will have to run in survival mode to get through when the proverbial hits the fan. And that's ok... for a short time.

It's when it persists, and there's no respite, and you are stuck in a rut - that's when we gotta pull back and reassess. That's when you gotta recalibrate. That's when you gotta nurture yourself.

It's really important to share the 'real' and not just the ideal.
I hope the snapshot of my recent struggles helps you feel normal.
And I hope it shows you that when you choose to partner with me to navigate your health, I take into consideration what changes will be reasonable and sustainable in your unique situation.

Reach out.
I'd love to support you.

Been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis? Or know someone who has?
PLEASE READ THIS:
Have you considered one contributing factor could be metabolic acid overload?

This “low-grade metabolic acidosis” (also known as chronic mild metabolic acidosis [CMMA] amongst health professionals) drains minerals, weakens bones, stresses kidneys & fuels fatigue.

How it works? ⚖ The kidneys control mineral balance in the blood, modulating which molecules to reabsorb or eliminate. Maintaining the balance of levels in the blood is prioritised at the expense of other tissues, and organs, including bones.

Why food intake matters? 🥩🥗 Different foods create metabolic by-products which the kidneys need to modulate. Higher intakes of acid forming foods increase the need for buffering molecules. Higher intakes of acid-resolving foods counteract acid load and create balance; while also supplying buffering minerals such as calcium and magnesium ---> 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱!

The diagnosis? 🩸Blood testing reveals patterns of waning bicarbonate indicating excessive use of this buffering agent to maintain blood pH.

The fix? ⚖️ Balance your plate.
🌱 Spinach, celery, bananas & raisins help buffer the acid load.
🥩 Meats, cheese, grains are acid-forming.

Other factors? 💊 Medications can hinder mineral absorption, further depleting your stores. Reflux medications are a big contributor - but reflux can be managed with dietary changes, nutritional intervention, and lifestyle modifications (and I can help with this!)

Ready to dig deeper? 👉 Book a consult so we can build a personalised plan to get you back in balance, protect your bones, and give your kidneys a break.

This month's A-Z of Food as Medicine focus is M is for Macadamia!
Raw, unsalted, sweet and creamy - the mighty macadamia is a ball of good fats.
Monounsaturated fatty acids from plant based foods like macadamias may lower what's known as "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and raise what's know as "good" cholesterol (HDL) thereby balancing lipids and improving cardiovascular health outcomes.

Plus these delicious delicacies may also improve the body's control of blood sugar levels 🙌

Polyunsaturated fatty acids include omega-3 and omega-6 fats which are essential fatty acids needed for brain function and healthy cell membranes.

Saturated fatty acids can be synthesised by the body, so dietary inclusion should be modest.

Macadamias contain about 14% SFAs, and 85% MFAs, making them an energy dense treat. Make sure you read labels for added ingredients, and opt for raw, unsalted, natural nuts and enjoy their benefits a couple of times a week.

I reckon these are nature's white chocolate!
Try some, and lemme know what you think.

*Advice here is general in nature, and may not be appropriate for everyone.
**Those with allergies to nuts/macadamias should avoid.

Tuna - A quick and easy lunchtime inclusion.
And something I often suggest to my busy clients who work full time and need to throw together a healthy, balanced lunch.

While it's great to eat plenty of fish, overdoing the tuna (and other large breeds such as marlin, flake, and swordfish) can have a negative impact on health.

Fish are a valuable source of protein, minerals, vitamin B12 and iodine. They are low in saturated fat and contain omega-3 fatty acids which are important for cellular integrity, managing inflammation, and brilliant for pregnant and breastfeeding mother's for the development of babies’ central nervous systems before and after birth.

Tuna are a large predatory fish, and contain higher amounts of mercury than smaller fish. Mercury content is not reduced by processing techniques such as canning, freezing or cooking.

To safely include fish as an important part of a balanced diet, limit tuna to 3 serves per week.

Serve sizes:

Adults & Children over 6 years one serve equals 150g.
Pregnant & breastfeeding women & women planning pregnancy one serve equals 150g.
Children under 6 years one serve equals 75g.

✨ Digestive health… it doesn’t stop with your gut.
Bloating, reflux, fatigue, skin issues, low mood – they may feel unrelated, but often the gut is at the centre of it all. 🎯
We will start with foundational interventions - healthy swaps, balanced meals, identifying foods that may trigger or exacerbate symptoms.

But sometimes, we need to dig deeper.

That’s where functional testing comes in.

By mapping your microbiome and looking at key digestive health markers, we can discover and uncover what’s really driving your symptoms.

We'll get answers to important questions:
🔎 Which bacteria are thriving (or missing) - Good? Bad? Ugly? 😬
🔎 How well you’re digesting and absorbing nutrients
🔎 Inflammation and irritation
🔎 Hyper-permeability (gaps between the cells, triggering an immune response)

With this data, we can build a targeted plan to restore balance, soothe and nourish the digestive tract, improve energy, and resolve those nagging health concerns—at the root.
👉 Curious about what your gut is telling you? Book a consult today and let’s map it out together.
