We often think of the psoas as a hip flexor, and it is.
However, did you know that's not it's main job? 🤯
The psoas's main job is actually to stabalize the spine during dynamic movement. So when you're walking for example it makes sure that things stay relatively in place.
Guess what doesn't move much when the psoas it tight then?
Yup. The spine. And then of course since everything is connected it's also going to affect the pelvis and the pelvic floor. Plus, as you can see in the image, it's closely related to our respiratory diaphragm and is in fact myofascially connected to it. So tight psoas = shallower breathing. There's also a deep connection to our emotional well-being, too and our nervous system but that's a whole other post.
The psoas has a huge job! Which is why we work with it in many classes and sometimes we make it the headliner of the show. I dropped "Pelvis 360" which addresses the psoas myofascially. That can be spicy work but it's so worth it!
See you on the mat yogis!
