Our Smilestone today is from 8 years onward!

In this Smilestone we encourage kids to brush regularly by themselves.

During this age kids will have some adult teeth and some baby teeth. Once adult teeth come in they are for life so they need to be brushed for two minutes morning and night.

We recommend seeing a dentist every six months so any issues can be picked up early.

Our Smilestone for today is from 6 – 8 years old!

In this Smilestone kids should be using adult toothpaste but they will still need help from an adult to brush their teeth. Kids should be brushing in the morning and night for two minutes at a time.

Visits to the dentist are recommended every six months.

During this stage kids can be demanding and very persistent at getting sweets and chocolate. Remember these foods feed the sugar bugs in our mouth that put holes in our teeth!

Our Smilestone for today is 18 months until 6 years!

Within this Smilestone parents should be helping kids brush twice a day for two minutes at a time. For older kids they can start flossing between any teeth that touch.

Long string floss can be difficult for kids to use so using a kids’ flosser or floss pick can make things a lot easier!

Early in this stage bubba may still take a bottle before bed. Make sure they have some water after the bottle to clean their mouth. Never put a bottle in the bed with anything other than water as feeding all night will damage kids teeth.

Our Smilestone for today is first tooth to 18 months.

In this stage you should be brushing bubba’s twice a day with children’s toothpaste. Children’s toothpaste has a lower fluoride content that is appropriate for their age.

If bubba hasn’t already been to the dentist by this stage now is a great time to go!

If you visit Mulungu clinics, bubba will get an oral health pack that has a soft toothbrush and the right toothpaste for their age.

Today is the first day of Dental Health Week! The theme for this year is helping kids reach their Smilestones!

The first Smilestone is birth to first tooth. In this Smilestone your bubba will have no teeth. Using a soft damp cloth to wipe their gums in this stage will get bubba used to having their mouth opened and cleaned. This will help ready them for the toothbrush when their teeth come through.

We recommend bubba’s first check up when their first tooth comes through or at 12 months. Whichever comes first! By visiting the dentist early, we can get bubba used to riding in the chair and catch any problems early.

We recommend five dental visits by the time your kids are five.
