HEALTHY SKIN BASICS ✨

It’s so simple to overcomplicate skin health. It’s not uncommon that I see a client on a complicated skincare routine and/or taking an array of supplements to support their skin, but they’re only able to tick 1–2 of the above boxes.
Without addressing the foundations, we aren’t able to achieve optimal skin health—or long-term skin health simply isn’t maintainable.

These are the daily, behind-the-scenes habits that support healthy skin from the inside out. They might not be flashy or quick-fix solutions—but they are essential.

Remember: we can layer in skincare, supplements, and treatments after the foundations are in place. Until then, it’s like building a house without a solid base.

Which of these habits are you currently focusing on?

Preparing for a Blood Test?🩸✨

Proper preparation for blood tests is key to getting the most accurate results. Here’s a checklist that I suggest for most tests:
✅ Avoid intense exercise for 48 hours: Heavy workouts can temporarily affect certain markers, such as liver enzymes and inflammatory markers, leading to skewed results.
✅ Skip alcohol for 2-3 days: Alcohol can impact blood sugar, liver function, and hydration levels, making it harder to interpret results accurately.
✅ Pause supplements like iron, biotin, and multivitamins: These can interfere with specific tests. Biotin, for example, may affect thyroid or hormone panels, so it’s best to stop 48-72 hours before.
✅ Fast for 10-12 hours: Many tests (e.g., glucose, cholesterol) require fasting for accurate readings. Stick to water during this time!
✅ Morning is best: Your body’s natural rhythms can influence hormone levels and other markers. Testing in the morning provides a more standardised baseline. It also makes it much easier to simply fast overnight!
✅ Hydrate well: Staying hydrated ensures your veins are more accessible for drawing blood and supports accurate electrolyte readings.

Your body is constantly adapting to lifestyle factors, and these steps help ensure your test results reflect your true health picture. Preparation matters! 🌿

✨ 2024 – what a year! ✨

After diving straight into launching ARC Wellness following multiple university degrees, I finally gave myself permission to slow down and rest, which has been amazing —not just for my health but also for my creativity. Taking time to recharge has reminded me how powerful rest is for every element of my health (finally getting to practice what I preach a bit more. in this regard!). The space to breathe has sparked some incredible ideas for 2025, and I can’t wait to bring them to life. 🦋

Here’s to the lessons of 2024: honouring rest, prioritising balance, and embracing the adventures that lie ahead—both personally and professionally 🫶

Thank you for being part of this journey. Bring on 2025! 🚀💛

BODY WASH 🧼

Continuing on with my product recommendation series, as requested, these are some of my favourite low-tox body washes 🛀

When looking at body washes & soaps, the key ingredients/categories to avoid are:

🫧 Sulfates (e.g., SLS/SLES): These are harsh detergents that allow soaps to foam/lather. However, they can strip away natural skin oils, leaving skin dry and irritated.
🫧 Synthetic Fragrances: A blend of chemicals often linked to allergies, hormone disruption, & skin sensitivity.
🫧 Parabens: Preservatives that extend shelf life but may mimic Oestrogen in the body, potentially disrupting hormonal balance.
🫧 Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that can harm your skin’s microbiome, reducing its natural defences.

Opting for a low-tox alternative is a relatively easy & inexpensive way to reduce unnecessary burden on your body. Let me know if you have any additional recommendations - I always love to try new products!

As always, please reach out below or via DM if you have any comments or questions 🫶

Did you know that a craving for ice is a sign of iron deficiency? 🧊

Iron is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in maintaining our overall health. Your body uses iron to make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. Iron is also essential in energy production, DNA synthesis and immune function.

Some other key signs of iron deficiency include:
🩸 Relenting fatigue & brain fog
🩸 Shortness of breath
🩸 Heart palpitations
🩸 Dizziness/lightheadedness
🩸 Headaches
🩸 Mood changes
🩸 Muscle weakness & spasms (including restless legs)
🩸 Low immunity
🩸 Cold hands & feet
🩸 Pale skin, gums &/or ocular conjunctiva
🩸 Swollen/cracked/pale/smooth tongue
🩸 Brittle nails
🩸 Hair loss
It’s so important to understand the cause of iron deficiency before thinking about supplementation. I see so many clients who have been taking iron supplements for years, with no significant changes in their blood work. If we don’t address the ‘why’ behind iron deficiency - we are unlikely to see improvements long-term.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on iron absorption, dietary factors, & supplementation - coming soon!

Following my sunscreen ingredient post from earlier this week, here are my top sunscreen recommendations ⭐️

Here I have focused on face sunscreens - some are both body & face (or the brand likely ranges an additional body-specific sunscreen).

Keep in mind, physical sunscreens are zinc-oxide based which can feel heavier on the skin & leave a slight white-cast. This is usually only the case upon application & before the product sinks in. However, to combat this - I usually mix in a liquid bronzer/skin tint or a lot of these brands also range tinted options!

In addition to avoiding nasty ingredients (mentioned in my last post). Here are some key considerations when picking a sunscreen:
🧴 A primary sunscreen. This means the sole purpose of the product is to be a sunscreen (ie. not a moisturiser/serum/foundation with added SPF)
🧴 SPF rating of at least 30 (ideally 50+). SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is calculated by measuring the difference between how long the skin takes to burn without protection, compared to how long it takes to burn wearing the sunscreen (ie. for SPF 30, the skin can withstand 30X the duration of sun exposure before burning). It’s important to know that SPF is a measurement of production against UVB rays only.
🧴Broad spectrum coverage. This means that the product is protective against both UVA & UVB rays.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or if you have any amazing sunscreen recommendations that I’ve missed here!

Ingredients to Avoid in Sunscreen 🧴

As we enter the warmer months - I wanted to chat about sunscreen. There is a lot of controversy surrounding sunscreen use & safety. I am a big advocate for sunscreen use, knowing that there is such a significant link between excess sun exposure and skin inflammation (& the obvious risk of skin cancer).

In saying this, not all sunscreen products are created equal. Many sunscreen ingredients have been shown to be endocrine-disruptors (ie. negatively impacting hormone health), often by mimicking oestrogen in the body. When selecting sunscreen, it’s vital to be aware of harmful ingredients that can affect your health and the environment.

☀️ Oxybenzone - A commonly used chemical UV filter shown to be an endocrine-disruptor. It can also harm coral reefs, contributing to marine degradation.

☀️ Octinoxate - Linked to skin irritation and endocrine disruption (including thyroid function), octinoxate also poses risks to marine ecosystems, leading to bans in some areas.

☀️ Homosalate - A UV filter that can build up in the body (especially if we have impaired detoxification pathways). It is another endocrine-disruptor, and has been shown to negatively impact the progression of breast cancer in diagnosed women.

☀️ Octocrylene - While it stabilises sunscreens, octocrylene breaks down into benzophenone (a known carcinogen). It can also produce free radicals that damage skin and may trigger allergic reactions.

☀️ Parabens - A preservative used in many skincare products. Has been shown to be an endocrine-disruptor. Opt for paraben-free products to minimize risks.

☀️ Fragrance - Often a mix of undisclosed chemicals, fragrance can cause allergies and hormonal imbalances. Opt for fragrance-free products for safer options.

I have a post coming shortly regarding specific sunscreen products that I recommend. However, I would always suggest opting for a broad spectrum mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide, for effective protection without harmful side effects.

As always, please pop any questions below or send me a DM 🫶

EGGS & ACNE 🥚

Eggs are a powerhouse of nutrition. They are rich in high-quality protein, choline, vitamins such as B2, B7 and B12, minerals like selenium and zinc, and healthy fats. However, they have been shown to occasionally contribute to skin inflammation in susceptible individuals.

Here’s what you need to know:

🥚 Hormones: Eggs can contain hormones that may increase sebum production, potentially clogging pores.

🥚 Inflammation: Arachidonic acid (a type of omega 6 fatty acid) in eggs can promote inflammation, possibly worsening acne for some.

🥚Allergies: Eggs are one of the most common allergens, with milder allergies/intolerances often going unnoticed for some time. Egg allergy or intolerance may trigger a skin reaction, including acne & Keratosis pilaris.

🥚Biotin (Vitamin B7): High biotin levels in eggs can interfere with the absorption of other skin-healthy nutrients, like vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which helps regulate the skin’s oil production.

I want to emphasise that eggs are a nutrient-rich food, that do not cause issues for most people. To identify if eggs might be contributing to acne severity, I suggest removing them entirely from the diet for 30 days and then re-introducing them slowly to see if you notice any difference.

As always, send me a message or comment below with any questions 🌻
