“Why does your low back hurt BEFORE your period even starts? 🤔
It’s actually TWO key things happening at once – and as a chiropractor passionate about women’s hormonal health, I see this ALL the time in clinic.
@ luteal.lab breaks it down perfectly:
1️⃣ Shared nerve wiring (referred pain)
Your uterus sends pain signals into the spinal cord at levels T10-L2 – the exact same levels that supply your lower back.
When the uterus gets inflamed or starts contracting in the late luteal phase (thanks to prostaglandins & hormonal shifts), your brain can misread those signals as low back pain.
Different organ → same spinal entry point = classic referred pain.
2️⃣ Ligament laxity (less support)
In the premenstrual phase, rising relaxin + other hormonal changes soften ligaments around the pelvis.
This leads to:
• Less joint stability
• More movement through the pelvis & SI joints
• Extra load & strain on your low back muscles
Add in an already sensitized nervous system from hormonal fluctuations… and boom – that familiar ache hits hard.
The good news? Targeted chiropractic care can help! We assess pelvic alignment, SI joint function, spinal mobility, and nervous system sensitivity to reduce that referred pain and improve stability – especially during your luteal phase when things feel extra wobbly.
If pre-period back pain is cramping your style (pun intended 😏), book in for a consult. Let’s get you moving easier through your cycle.
