When they understand birth, your needs, and their role, everything changes.

They can advocate for you, protect your space, remind you to breathe, offer physical comfort measures, set up your birth space, and speak gentle loving, supportive words when you need reassurance.

They don’t need to be perfect. They just need to be present.

When you prepare together, they feel ready too — and you feel more supported.

✨Early labour - what to expect✨

Early labour is the time from when labour begins, until active labour, when the cervix is around 3-4cm dilated.

It can last hours — or even days — and that’s okay.

In no particular order, you might feel:

👉 Mild, irregular tightenings (like period cramps)

👉 Lower backache or pressure

👉 A show (mucus plug)

👉 Nesting energy… or sudden fatigue

👉 Sometimes constipation, more often diarrhoea

👉 Instincts that this is it!

This is a great time to:

😴 Sleep, rest or nap

🥘Eat nourishing, light meals

🎥 Watch a feel-good movie

🛀 Take a relaxing bath or warm shower

🫁 Practice your breathing techniques

Avoid obsessing over timing surges (contractions) — that can trigger adrenaline and slow things down.

Active labour will need your focus. Until then, try to go on as normal.

Prioritise rest.

I tell parents in my Hypnobirthing class to ignore until you can’t ignore any more!

Early labour is often overlooked, but it’s an important and sacred part of the birthing journey.

Surges (contractions) might be mild, irregular, or even stop and start.
You may feel excitement — or uncertainty. That’s normal.

This is the time to rest, nourish yourself, and ease into the rhythm of birth. Trust your body. Trust your baby.

Create a calm environment, limit stimulation, and save your energy for active labour.

You’re not on the clock. You don’t need to rush.

Breathe, rest, hydrate… and wait for things to unfold.

Magic is about to happen 💕

Did you know birth is powered by a cocktail of hormones?

Oxytocin, endorphins, adrenaline, melatonin and prolactin all play their unique roles — like a beautifully choreographed dance — to help your body open, contract, manage intense sensations, and bond with baby.

In terms of labour & birth, the key hormones are:

❤️ Oxytocin, known as the love hormone, triggers surges (contractions) and creates feelings of calm and connection.

💪🏿 Endorphins, they act as natural pain relief, 20-40 times more powerful than opioids.

🎢 Adrenaline helps attain the incredible amount of energy needed for the final moments to expel your baby, and to bring you ‘back into your body’.

These hormones are sensitive to your environment — bright lights, noise, or stress can disrupt their flow.

That’s why creating a calm, safe space during labour is so important.

When your body’s chemistry flows, birth flows too.
