There are many things to arrange before heading off overseas, yet just like a passport, it’s wise to organise health checks and vaccinations ahead of time.

The list of vaccinations can vary depending on your destination, ranging from a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to specific requirements such as Yellow Fever immunisation.

Although some vaccinations may provide peace of mind, others are mandatory to enter and exit some countries.

Conducting research ahead of time can also help determine if there is any local health advice related to your planned destinations.

You may also find other health tips that complement vaccinations, such as packing hygiene items that may prove hard to source once you arrive.

These efforts may help reduce the potential health risks of the places you plan to visit and ultimately increase the chances of a sickness-free holiday or business trip.

This research may see more questions regarding the suitability of visiting some destinations, especially if there is an underlying health condition.

Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can provide more detailed health-related information and medical advice concerning your travel plans while helping to arrange vaccinations appropriate for countries you visit.

During these peak summer months, it’s wise to stay aware of hydration, particularly when we have an underlying health condition or caring for the young or elderly.

A focus on hydration is of even greater importance when there is a fluctuation in weather, such as an excessively humid night or if we have been exercising beyond our routine.

Water is a cheap, healthy and accessible way for everyone to hydrate.

Although the appeal of water may lack, we can add healthy flavourings such as lemon or cucumber, yet if that is not to some tastes, we can at least use a fancy cup or bottle.

Having a glass of water at the start of the day is a quick and easy way to prime our bodies, regardless of the weather or physical activity ahead.

Where hydration is of concern, the doctors at Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can assess, treat and manage these and related conditions.

Although not a term heard often in the news, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects around 1 in 7 Australians over 40 years of age.

However, most of us have heard of the lung diseases chronic bronchitis and emphysema that constitute a large proportion of the COPD conditions diagnosed.

COPD may derive from genetics or environmental causes, such as exposure to dust, vapour, gas, or fumes at work, yet smoking is a common cause.

This group of lung diseases block airflow and makes breathing difficult, yet many of those with COPD remain unaware.

Instead, some may assume that their shortness of breath, chronic cough or wheezing is due to asthma, a lack of fitness or their age.

By determining the cause of breathing difficulties, your doctor can assist in managing any conditions identified and arranging investigations such as a lung function test.

Identifying chronic conditions may assist in developing a strategy specific to individual needs that offset the effects of a disease or slows its progression.

Proper management and medication through your doctor, such as inhalers, may help control symptoms and, at the very least, improve an individual's quality of life.

Although children are vulnerable in and around water, the Royal Life Saving Society has highlighted that statistically, young men aged 18 to 34 are at the most risk of drowning.

Research shows that risk-taking, the use of alcohol and drugs, and the absence of appropriate safety precautions, including life jackets, are significant factors in male drowning.

The Make the Right Call campaign encourages all Australians to look after their mates when enjoying this country’s inland waterways.

Heading to a local supervised swimming pool or between the flags at the beach may help us safely gauge our current skill level and those activities that may meet our current ability in the water.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can complement swimming safety measures by assessing your current health and providing medical advice regarding exercise, diet or well-being routines.

By maintaining regular schedules for our health check-ups, we can help to reduce the risk of chronic disease or, at the very least, potentially delay its onset.

These health checks may also assist in identifying other health issues, allowing space for us to make healthy changes to our current lifestyle.

Some of these tests apply to everyone, such as:
- Skin cancer screening
- Blood pressure test
- Cholesterol test

Other screening is age-specific:
- Cervical cancer (Women 25-74)
- Bowel cancer (Anyone 50-74)
- Breast cancer (Women 40+)
- Prostate cancer (Men 50+)

If caring for others, there are often schedules applicable to them, such as children’s immunisation or a shingles vaccine for adults aged 60 years and over.

Beyond these tests, if experiencing new symptoms of concern, investigating them with your GP sooner rather than later may help avoid unplanned visits to the hospital or medical complications.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can discuss which tests are relevant to your stage of life, answer any questions and provide advice for optimising your health.

Some of us may have heard of 'acute' injuries yet not understand the term.

For those unfamiliar with the terminology, these injuries happen suddenly, unlike 'chronic' conditions that develop gradually over time.

Preferably we deal with these acute injuries quickly so that their impact is short-term.

Taking action may also avoid re-injury that sees a relatively minor injury or condition become more complex or require long-term management.

Your doctor can assess and treat these short-term stings, scrapes, twists and other minor injuries to help optimise recovery.

If re-injury does occur or a chronic condition develops, your doctor is also there to manage more complex needs, such as long-term wounds that result from an underlying chronic disease.

Regardless of the type of injury, your doctor can treat conditions to prevent infection or further health complications and provide post-treatment care or advice regarding self-care.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can perform minor procedures onsite and work with specialists and allied health professionals as required.

With the holidays over, returning to school may highlight some elements of children's health not previously noticed.

These areas could range from something basic, such as difficulty seeing or hearing the teacher's lessons, to an injury from leaping back into their favourite sport.

A lack of concentration, struggling to sit still when completing a task or feeling generally unwell at school could also cause concern.

Efforts to optimise children's mental and physical health at school may help complement learning and social skills.

The doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can help assess and treat childhood health conditions, working with specialists and allied health professionals as required.

Although best considered all year round, as we approach the peak of summer, hydration is more applicable than ever.

Keeping our fluid levels up is especially crucial for those caring for older adults or younger children.

The daily recommendation to maintain hydration is two litres of water, which equates to about eight glasses, yet this may increase with higher levels of humidity or physical activity.

For some, this volume of fluids is hard to swallow, yet more flavoursome drinks such as juice or soft drink contain sugar we may wish to avoid.

Tea and coffee have a diuretic effect on the body that sees us pass more fluid, while sports drinks that appear healthier may have more than half the sugar of soft drinks.

If after a healthy hydrating option, there are plenty of foods with a high water content that can work in tandem with your water intake to help optimise hydration.

Cucumbers have the highest water content of any solid food, and tomatoes are the fruit with the highest water volume.

For those preferring something lighter and a little sweeter, strawberries and watermelon follow close behind.

Alternatively, we could add zucchini, celery, carrot and radish to a summer salad with iceberg lettuce or pack kiwi fruit, peaches, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapefruit or apples into a lunch.

In the evenings, potatoes, broccoli, eggplant and cauliflower or a healthy broth can help put back fluids taken by the heat of the day.

If you have questions regarding hydration or other health related areas, Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore's doctors can provide information and advice based on your well-being needs.

Areas of food and fashion have their phases of popularity and so too do skincare products.

However, as skincare is integral to our well-being, it is wise to remember that proper skin care relies on a tradition backed by science.

Take, for example, a recent boost in the popularity of Retinoids, used to enhance skin tone, pigmentation and texture.

Retinoids are topical vitamin A products that act on the skin's elastin and collagen.

For that who are unaware, exposure to sunlight renders vitamin A inactive.

Understanding this makes it logical to use retinoid products at night, keep the products out of direct sunlight and may explain skin sensitivity in sunlight for some during their initial use.

Although there is some contention regarding increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation when using Retinoids, it would seem wise to wash off the product in the morning.

Applying moisturiser and sunscreen before venturing outdoors may form part of your skincare routine, especially since Australians live in the skin cancer capital of the world.

Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can provide skin cancer checks and answer queries or concerns when beginning or altering skincare or health routines.

07/12/2022

A tricky aspect of maintaining a healthy diet with fresh whole foods is the time and effort required to prepare and cook the meal.

At the end of a workday, it is difficult to muster the energy required to create a meal from scratch, yet everyone can share a sense of achievement once a meal is ready.

Meal time is where the adage of ‘many hands make light work’ comes into play to bolster our chances of success by reducing the physical and mental load.

We can use meal preparation as an opportunity to share and discuss ideas, events or concerns, and by cooking together, we may also strengthen relationships within the household.

Our kids can exercise their self-esteem and creativity by trying out new meals while developing skills that may come in handy later in adulthood.

Cooking may also create a platform for children to hone their communication skills and vocabulary, plus measuring ingredients in meal preparation provides a practical use of mathematics.

When seeking to implement and maintain a healthy meal routine, the doctors of Medpods Medical Centre Maroochydore can complement your efforts by managing your medical needs and offering advice to optimise your well-being.

Appointments are available online through the website or with our friendly reception staff by calling 07 5391 4677.
