A big day calls for a safe landing.

MTA Provisional Psychologist Tahlia shares with us why a big day calls for a safe landing.

For your child, that safe place is home. What comes next might look messy and that's okay.

What is a high-demand day?
School, therapy, appointments, social outings. These all ask your child to regulate, comply, perform and hold it together for hours. That is genuinely hard work, especially for neurodivergent kids.

What happens when they get home?
Home is safe. So the pressure releases. This can look like meltdowns, shutdown, refusal, crying over small things, or going completely crazy the moment they walk through the door.

It's not bad behaviour. It's a nervous system doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

Keep an eye on our socials for Part 2- A safe landing starts with space.

FIRST WEEK BACK TO SCHOOL – BONUS ROUTINE TIPS

If the last post had you nodding along, here are a few more ideas to tuck away for those busy school-week mornings and evenings:

Visuals help adults AND kids. A quick stick figure sketch of what's on that day, or photos of what needs to go in the school bag, can take so much of the "what am I forgetting?!" pressure off. No artistic skills required, promise.

Plan ahead where you can. School clothes laid out at the end of the bed, breakfast cereal and bowls on the table the night before, games packed away to reduce distractions, and cook bigger batches so future-you has leftovers for dinner. Little wins = calmer mornings.

"Mouse Timer" is a free app that shows kids how much time is left – whether that's before school, during teeth brushing, or any of those tricky transitions. A game-changer for kiddos who find "two more minutes" a bit abstract.

Small tweaks, big difference. Save this one for the mornings that need it!

FIRST WEEK BACK TO SCHOOL

Let us give you some tips (from our OTs) on ways to help your kids (and you!) settle back into a routine after school holidays.

Everyday routines can feel like a lot, especially in that first week back. A few little shifts from our OT brain that might make the day-to-day a bit smoother.

Kids love connection and often hate demands. A bit of fun goes a long way to shift the battles, especially when transitioning away from a preferred activity to things like bath or teeth. What does your kiddo love? Humour, racing the adults, pretend play (hello superhero teeth brushing), or "bath first, then let's play Uno together!" Work with what lights them up.

Mums and Dads playing is HARD when you're stressed or running late. Whenever you can, don't forget to look after yourself too. A quick stretch outside, a (still warm!) cup of tea, or actually finishing that water bottle counts. You can't pour from an empty cup, team.

Hope the first week back is treating your family kindly.

WHAT A SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!

Where do we even start?!

Superhero Training Academy saw our kiddos scaling obstacle courses, mastering their superpowers, and proving (yet again) that capes make everything 10% more possible.

Super Siblings brought the noise, the giggles, and some seriously impressive teamwork. We loved every second of having you lot in the clinic.

Physio intensives were running alongside it all with big goals, big effort, big wins. So proud of every single one of you.

AND… Alex visited us for the school holidays from Perth. We even got to celebrate her birthday while she was here!

To every family who came through our doors these holidays, thank you. You filled this place with energy, laughter, and a whole lot of heart. Back to school we go!

Let's talk Orthotics / AFO's.
From in-shoe orthotics to AFOs, SMOs, and supportive footwear, there are more options than most parents realise. And the right choice looks different for every child.

Swipe through to learn:
✅ The difference between off the shelf and custom orthotics
✅ When an SMO is recommended over an AFO
✅ Our MTA favourite supportive shoe brands and why we love them

At MTA, our physio can assess your child's feet to determine what support option is best. She also works collaboratively with a local podiatrist if needed - so you get the full picture and a plan that actually fits your child's life.

We ran several school holiday groups over the first week of school holidays and this one was a clear standout (in colourful tights, no less)!

Superhero Training Academy brought a group of kids together for a morning of play based therapy wrapped up in a whole lot of superhero energy. Our therapists went all in with their costumes and it absolutely set the tone for the whole session.

Group settings offer something one on one sessions just can't. Kids get to practise real social skills in real moments like working as a team, shared engagement, communication and problem solving together, all while having a genuinely great time.

Every activity was purposeful, building skills like gross motor coordination, self regulation, fine motor skills, social communication and having positive social experiences with peers. The kids were too busy crawling through laser tunnels, rescuing teammates on scooter boards, battling bubble monsters and building towers together to even realise they were doing therapy work!

Our team loved every minute of it. There's something special about watching kids cheer each other on, problem solve together and walk out the door buzzing. School holiday groups are a highlight for us and based on the grins we saw all morning, the kids would say the same.

As a physio at MTA, I see many kiddos come through with questions about their feet. Flat feet can be one of the most misunderstood presentations.

Are they normal? Should you be worried? Do they need orthotics?

We're breaking it all down in this series so you have the full picture.

Swipe through to learn:
✅ What we actually look for when assessing flat feet
✅ How feet develop from birth
✅ Why foot posture affects way more than just the foot
✅ When barefoot is best- and when it's not enough

Part two covers all your options - from orthotics to supportive footwear - so stay tuned!

Emotions are information. They're not problems to fix or feelings to push through, they're a real and valid part of how we experience the world.

Emotion regulation isn't about avoiding or quieting our emotions. It's about building a relationship with them. Learning to notice what we're feeling, make sense of it, and find ways to respond that work for us, not against us.

When we're regulated, we can sit with big feelings without being swept away. We can pause before we respond. We can find our way back to a state that feels okay; whatever "okay" looks like for each of us.

And here's the thing: there's no one right way to get there. Different brains, different bodies, different experiences; regulation looks different for everyone, and that's not just okay, it's expected.

The best part? These are learnable skills. And the earlier we start, the better.

This week, our Superhero Groups are creating exactly that kind of space! Where children can explore their emotions, discover what works for their unique brain and body, and build these skills in a fun, safe, and affirming environment. A place where they belong, exactly as they are.

Ever wondered what we get up to during intensive week at More Than Able?

This is our physio Delia doing what she does best - and no two intensives look the same.

Each child gets a tailored 2-week block, with 90-minute sessions every other day during school holidays. That means no missed school days, and no disruption to term time - just focused, high-frequency therapy right when your family needs it most.

Delia draws on everything in her toolkit - hands-on techniques, Thera Togs, DMI, motor pattern retraining, and more - building each intensive around what your child specifically needs to work on.

More repetition = more learning = skills that really stick.
We call that neuroplasticity.

Intensives are perfect for kids working on:
✅ Strength & balance
✅ Movement milestones
✅ Big goals they're ready to tackle

Spots are limited and only available during school holidays, so if you've been thinking about it - now is the time to reach out.

DM us to find out if an intensive is the right fit for your little one. We'd love to chat!

Today we had podiatrist John Gallagher, Co-Director of spending the day with us at More Than Able - and honestly, this is exactly the kind of thing we love.

John and Delia have worked together on a handful of shared clients over the past year, and the results spoke for themselves. So when John reached out about collaborating more formally - we said yes without hesitation.

Here is why this matters.
Feet are the foundation for movement. Without alignment and stability at the foot, we are setting kids up for a much harder road - no matter how much work we do on strength and motor patterns above.

When physio and podiatry work in silos, things get missed. When they work together, everything clicks.

Today looked like this - Delia ran the physio session focusing on functional strength and motor patterns, while John observed the child moving, playing and working, assessing their feet in a real, functional environment. No separate waiting rooms. No repeating your child's history twice. Just two specialists, in the room together, working toward the same goals for your child.

The result? Tailored treatment. Joint goals. Shorter wait times. And better outcomes.

This is now a quarterly clinic at More Than Able - running every 3 months for families who want that next level of joined-up care.

Lunch time chats at MTA come with a few guarantees — laughs, stretching, the occasional handstand, spilled food or drinks, and of course, cuddles with Dottie.

But no matter what, you will hear at least one of these before the break is over:
"I need some proprioceptive input"
"You can use an obstacle course in your session to work on this goal"
"For this environment, we need a lot less light and a lot more vibes"

(Who are we kidding — all three get said. Multiple times. Every. Single. Day.)
