Due to popular demand I have scheduled an additional Art and Science of Love Workshop to be held on 30 November and 1 December 2024 at Mantra Mooloolaba. Head to the Sunshine Coast for an interactive skills building workshop with your partner at The Art and Science of Love Workshop - developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman based on their decades of research into what it takes to maintain a connected relationship and what is most likely to predict a relationship ending. This month began with a great group of couples working hard on learning new information and skills to improve their relationship at The Art and Science of Love Workshop at Mantra Mooloolaba on 2 and 3 March. A huge shout out and thankyou to all of the lovely couples who attended for their enthusiasm and engagement to make for a super fun and interactive weekend. I admire all of your commitment to strive for your relationship to be the best it can be! We hope you have had a day of rituals, connection, laughter, presents and like us have super full tummies and perhaps a slight glow from too much sun right now!!! The picture in this post is of one of my favourite Christmas decorations, a wreath our daughter made in prep. It makes me feel happy to see when I get it out each year. Christmas can be tough on couples, working tirelessly to get everything perfect for both immediate and extended family and often the joy lies in the simplest places.

I hope you have a minute to sit back and enjoy simple moments and laugh about ridiculous things as we have. I love that the hard work is out of the way now and the hardest decision we now have to make is if we go for our third night of Christmas movies in a row. For us this Christmas is about the joy of Christmas with older children as we celebrate with one about to enter their first year of being a teen and the other about to enter their last. We have loved seeing lots of the old rituals like the Christmas Stockings and Christmas movies and all our favourite Christmas foods still bring joy and laughs while presents have changed from toys to makeup and gifts for adulting being gratefully received.

Wishing you and your partner some moments of connection as you celebrate that together you have pulled off another Christmas 🍾👏👏👏

Conflict and connection tend to go hand in hand. When conflict happens more often we often feel less connected and once we feel less connected even simple conversations can easily lead to conflict. This is a painful cycle that can feel hard to break. Slowing things down and becoming more intentional in your communication can help. Making time to talk abut your day together and to do fun things together can also help rebuild connection and make harder conversations go better. If you are having trouble finding your way back couples therapy can help you regain the confidence you need for good communication and connection.

Quality time together doesn't have to mean a token date night. Walking or exercising together regularly can bring opportunities for positive connection and dipping in and out of conversation. For my husband and I, our biggest (amd smallest) issues of life tend to be hashed out while walking. Dogs optional but highly recommended! And of course, a date night can be good too when you can swing it! What is your favourite connection ritual?

Experiencing any or all of these things in your relationship can feel isolating and painful. What is important for the moment is to try not to escalate the negativity. Try to manage the temptation to revert to criticism to express your hurt. Be responsive to your partner's conversational bids for connection by providing acknowledgement. Put the brakes on and suggest a break if a conversation seems to be turning into a conflict. An experienced couples therapist may be able to help you have some of the harder conversations and help you rebuild that positive connection you once shared.
