Following the tragic incident at Bondi Beach, Lifeblood has issued urgent calls for O negative blood across NSW. Fewer than 7% of Australians have this blood type, and it’s critical in emergencies when a patient’s blood type is unknown.

SAVE CARDIAC SERVICES @ SYDNEY CHILDRENS HOSPITAL RANDWICK - PLEASE SHARE THIS POST

As a branch member of the Sydney Children's Hospital NSW Nursing and Midwifery association I support this petition. If Cardiac and ECMO services are lost at Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick, children are at risk. ECMO is an emergency heart/lung bypass machine that children are put onto in an emergency because either their lungs, heart or both have failed.

Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick has put 16 CHILDREN on ECMO in the last 18 months alone. These children are all previously well children that have deteriorated rapidly from severe asthma, septic shock, trauma accidents, respiratory viruses, complications at birth/delivery (at RHW), oncology complications, heart infections, the list goes on.

These patients when put on ECMO are so critically unwell that they would not survive a transfer all the way to the Children’s Hospital Westmead.

Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick also takes up to 75% of admissions via NETS transport service for critically unwell children from the whole of NSW, some of these patients have also needed ECMO services so children beyond the Eastern Suburbs catchment are also at risk.

Please sign this petition in support of cardiac services at Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick so that these essential life saving services can be available at both the children’s hospitals in Sydney.
