PREGNANCY can be a magical experience, but there are often a few physical changes that can make it a little uncomfortable... If you're fortunate not to have nausea, there's the reflux that most women experience at some time during their pregnancy :(

There are some simple ways to manage these symptoms. One of the most effective strategies is to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. This helps prevent your stomach from becoming too full, which can reduce the likelihood of acid rising into the esophagus.

Along with this, itโ€™s important to avoid common trigger foods like spicy and acidic foods, oily foods, and being careful with chocolate, caffeine and of course alcohol, which can all exacerbate reflux symptoms.

And although you might feel like lying down immediately after eating, it's best to give yourself at least 2-3 hours before going to bed or reclining, so your body has time to digest and keep acid from flowing back up.

There are any foods you can continue to enjoy. If you need some help just reach out to us so we can help you through your pregnancy.

SLEEP LIKE A BEAR. Reflux can really mess with your sleep. When you lie down, especially on your back, stomach acid can easily flow back into your oesophagus, causing pain and sometimes respiratory issues. Many people with reflux also have sleep apnea, which we know affects breathing and can cause more serious health issues.

Diet plays a crucial role in managing reflux. Finding your 'trigger foods' can take time and will differ depending on your level of sensitivity, which can change during the different stages of healing.

In general, it's best to avoid heavy meals before bed, be wary of highly acidic foods and spicy dishes, go light on oily and fried foods, and consider eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day.

A simple tip? Try sleeping on your left side. This position helps keep your stomach below the esophagus, reducing the chances of acid making its way back up. Itโ€™s a small change that can make a big difference.

Then you can start sleeping more soundly and wake up feeling refreshed - just like a bear after a long, peaceful hibernation. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿป

Silent reflux, or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), can sneak up on you with symptoms like a sore throat, constant coughing, or an annoying feeling of something stuck in your throat. But because it doesn't always cause the heartburn, silent reflux often goes undiagnosed.

If youโ€™ve been dealing with these symptoms, it might be time to consider silent reflux as the culprit. Untreated LPR can lead to respiratory issues, chronic sinus and ear problems, vocal cord damage, swallowing difficulties, and increased risk of throat and oesophageal cancer. Addressing LPR early is important for overall throat and digestive health.

Don't let it go untreated - your throat may need some TLC.

Did you know that a persistent cough can be a symptom of acid reflux? Many people believe that heartburn is the only symptom of reflux, and so their reflux goes unchecked and untreated. As a result, they don't make the necessary dietary changes to manage their reflux and prevent it from getting worse.

Acid reflux, (GERD or GORD), can cause a range of symptoms, including a difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, a sore throat, coughing and of course heartburn.

When stomach acid irritates the lining of the oesophagus, it can lead to a cough that doesn't seem to go away. This is because the acid can travel up into the throat and lungs, causing irritation and inflammation.

If you've been dealing with a stubborn cough, it might be time to consider whether reflux is the cause. Understanding and managing your symptoms can lead to better health and improved quality of life.

There's also research linking COVID infection with an increased risk of gastrointestinal problems, including reflux. More for another day.

FOOD+MEDICINE NO. 11: WATERMELON ๐Ÿ‰Growing up in Queensland, summer was synonymous with watermelon. It was amazingly thirst-quenching and something about having a large slice of dripping watermelon in your hands, trying to eat it without making a mess, seemed to help the process of cooling off.

Little did we know that watermelon is rich in lycopene, a potent antioxidant that the body uses to protect cells, benefiting heart health, skin, eyes, prostate, and reducing pain sensitivity.

Humankind seems to be fascinated by watermelons, and there have been some amusing stories about watermelon robberies over the years, throughout the world. I don't know if it's related to the lycopene content, but buyer beware!

"Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme..." Do you remember this old ballad? Apparently, it was collected from a retired lead miner in England, it sounds so sad ๐Ÿ˜ž and no doubt he had reason.

But as well as being a lovely melody; it's a tribute to four incredible herbs! ๐ŸŒฟ These herbs not only elevate a meal but also offer fantastic benefits for your brain and mood! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฑ Parsley: Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, parsley has been found to reduce anxiety and lift mood.

๐ŸŒฟ Sage: With new research for its positive effects on brain function, sage is your go-to for the ageing brain (no promises!).

๐ŸŒฟ Rosemary: "Rosemary for remembrance" they say. This herb has long been valued for memory and concentration, and its anti-inflammatory qualities.

๐ŸŒฟ Thyme: Naturally rich in carvacrol, thyme is a natural mood booster that can help to increase the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine.

Next time youโ€™re in the kitchen, add a sprinkle of these magical herbs for a boost to your brain and mood! ๐ŸŒฟโœจ Which one do you love using the most? Let me know in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ’ฌ

FOOD+MEDICINE NO. 9 SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS If you'd like to add some anti-ageing to your recipes, look no further than these little fungi (fun guy!), shiitake mushrooms or Lentinula edodes. They've long been considered symbols of longevity and wellbeing. Shiitake contain an antioxidant called ERGOTHIONINE which has remarkable anti-ageing properties. Studies show that ergothionine can help to preserve telomeres which are part of the chromosomes in our cells. We also know that they're packed with B vitamins, in particular B5, which is vital for energy and helps your body produce hormones to cope with stress.

You can buy dried shiitake from the supermarket and it just takes about 30 min in water to make them ready to use. Pop them in a stir fry, noodle soup, or just add them to a sandwich. Cheap, cheerful, and anti-ageing ๐Ÿ™‚
