When your focus is on the feeling of stress when youre having an experience it can lead to creating a “story” about what it means to be stressed, which can then have you going “”down the vortex of the story”” without ever considering why that story exists.

Responding to or acting from the place of the story without awareness can actually create even more stress. It can also reinforce the stress or reinforce a pattern of dysregulation.

Anger is a sacred messenger.

We’ve learnt that anger is ugly, too messy, difficult and must be hidden away.

But when we listen to anger, there’s a deeper message…

- a boundary has been crossed
- a need has gone ignored
- a deeper hurt sits here

So if we listen to our anger rather than react to it we can attend to something deeper calling our attention…on the contrary, if we ignore or suppress our anger it can manifest in physical, emotional and biochemical imbalances.

When you meet your feelings from a non-judgmental space, your nervous system finally feels safe enough to show you where you really are.

But the moment you pretend it’s something it’s not, you create stress in the system… and the loop starts again.

Processing stops.
Patterns repeat.
And you end up back in the same box you were trying to escape.

When you stop judging your emotions and actually let yourself tune in… something powerful happens:

Your brain stops fighting for its life and finally has the space to do what it’s designed to do , complete the loop.

👉 No shutting down.
👉 No suppressing.
👉 Just allowing.

And in that space, your system goes, “Oh… I know exactly what to do with this.”

“Instead of resisting, controlling, or shutting it down, let the mind run its course. Let the story move through.

Because often, the story isn’t the point.
Acceptance is.
Presence is.

When we stop wrestling with our thoughts and simply acknowledge, “This is what’s happening right now”

That’s the moment we start to feel okay again. 🤍

Staying calm is not the same as being regulated. It can be a side effect but it isn’t the goal either…

Becoming regulated is about being present and being in flow with the experience, regardless of whether we perceive it as good or bad.

Trying to block or push down our experience works as a way of trying to control our emotions and control our nervous system but control leads to heightened states of arousal and more stress hormones. Regulation allows us to experience what we’re feeling while also staying connected and grounded through it.

The key here is that while we’re able to be regulated through different experiences we are able to show up in a way that generates self respect and aligns us with our integrity. We are also able to look after ourselves physically, chemically and emotionally. Moments like this lead to days, months and a life that we enjoy and look forward to.

A common trap is believing: Calm = regulated.

But real regulation isn’t about avoiding big feelings or forcing yourself into stillness.⁣

It’s the ability to be with your emotions.
To feel your nervous system shift, and stay connected.
To move flexibly through different states without getting stuck.⁣

Regulation is not calmness.
