February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month! 👁️

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss, affecting millions worldwide. This disease damages the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

What are the types?

🔹 Normal Vision: A healthy macula allows for clear central vision.
🔹 Dry Macular Degeneration (🏜️): Slow-progressing, with yellow deposits (drusen) forming under the retina, leading to gradual vision loss.
🔹 Wet Macular Degeneration (💦): More severe, caused by abnormal blood vessels leaking fluid into the retina, leading to rapid and significant vision loss.

Confused by your glasses prescription? Let us explain it in plain Aussie terms:

1️⃣ OD / OS: Fancy words for your eyes! OD is your right eye, OS is your left eye. Easy, right?

2️⃣ SPH (Sphere): This is the strength of your lenses. If you’re short-sighted (-) or long-sighted (+), this number fixes it.

3️⃣ CYL (Cylinder): Got astigmatism? This measures how much correction your eye needs to deal with its rugby-ball shape.

4️⃣ Axis: This is for astigmatism too. It’s the angle (0°-180°) where your lens will work best to clear things up.

5️⃣ Add: If you’ve got multifocal lenses, this is the extra zoom you need for reading or close work.

6️⃣ PD (Pupillary Distance): The distance between your pupils – important so your lenses line up perfectly.
