Pilates:
Pilates (first developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates) is a whole body conditioning form of exercise which in particular builds core strength and stability, but also aids to improve flexibility, strength and endurance of all muscles in the body. Pilates is often considered an integral part of rehabilitation, on-going management and prevention of lumbar (low-back) pain/injuries, and is also an excellent form of combined aerobic and strength training. Dulwich Physiotherapy has Polestar Pilates trained instructors who run mat-based Pilates classes on site each week. We offer both beginner and intermediate/advanced level classes all of which are limited to 8 clients per class to ensure greater supervision to reinforce important principles of movement, assist with correct technique and modification of exercises to suit individual needs. A client must undergo a Pre-Pilates fitness screening conducted by a physiotherapist prior to commencing classes to ensure that they are undertaking an appropriate level class. Dulwich Physiotherapy also offers 1-1 Pilates sessions for clients new to Pilates, those who have specific requirements or those who do not feel comfortable attending a group class. Pilates Timetable:
Beginner Level:
Tuesday 12:00pm – 12:45pm
Thursday 11am – 11:45am

Intermediate - Advanced Level:
Tuesday 5:15pm – 6pm
Tuesday 6pm – 6:45pm
Saturday 8:30am - 9:15am

Cost:
$24.50 per class (rebate offered with private health companies). Hydrotherapy:
Hydrotherapy is the practice of undertaking exercise in water. Hydrotherapy has many benefits such as; decreasing pain due to warmth of the water, decreased loading through joints due to the buoyancy effect of water, assistance with balance training due to the interaction of the density of the water and human body, and aerobic and resistance training benefits due to the increased resistance of the water, compared with air, against the human body. Hydrotherapy is particularly beneficial for Osteoarthritis, rehabilitation from joint replacements or surgical repairs, recovery post traumatic injury (e.g. motor vehicle accident), and for general fitness purposes. Dulwich Physiotherapy currently runs one hydrotherapy session per week on Tuesdays at 1pm at the nearby located State Swim on The Parade at Norwood. Our physiotherapists devise and oversee clients completing individualised programs specific to their needs. Class size is a maximum of 6 to ensure greater supervision of clients. We are hoping to add an extra session on Thursdays if client interest is sufficient. Cost:
$24.50 per class + additional $4 pool usage fee class (rebate offered with private health companies). Proactive Living Classes:
As we age it becomes increasingly more important to keep fit and active. “Use it or lose it” is the old saying. At Dulwich Physiotherapy we offer strength and balance classes for the older population. Classes involve a combination of chair-based, standing and floor-based exercises that use dumbbell weights, theraband resistance bands, fit balls and magic circles. Proactive Living Timetable:
Thursday 10am – 10:45am (beginner level)

Cost:
$24.50 per class (rebate offered with private health companies).

Osteoporosis = weaker bones (reduced bone density) and higher fracture risk. It is a common condition mainly affecting people over the age of 50, with females ~4x more likely to be diagnosed.

The good news? Exercise is medicine. Exercise can build bone and muscle strength and improve balance (reducing risk of falls), among many other benefits. Low-impact exercise is one of the best things you can do if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it.

At Dulwich Physiotherapy we host Strength & Balance, Osteohealth, and mat-based Pilates classes which are suitable forms of exercise for Osteoporosis. Our physiotherapists can also create an individualised program focussing on your lifestyle and goals. Book an appointment today to keep you moving confidently!

Osteoarthritis

You may have been told you have osteoarthritis, and that your affected joint is ‘bone-on-bone’ … but this isn’t actually the case.

Osteoarthritis is characterised by degenerative changes in the joint - which is completely normal as we age. The most important thing is that we stay active and strong, to ensure our joints are adequately supported.

We’re here to help you move with less fear and more freedom. Book an appointment with one of our physiotherapists to get started on your journey if regaining strength, confidence, and independence!

Frozen shoulder (aka adhesive capsulitis)

Struggling with shoulder pain and stiffness that just won’t go away? It could be frozen shoulder - a condition that limits your movement.

Frozen shoulder is common in people aged 40-60, with a higher likelihood in females. Frozen shoulder can feel like your shoulder is ‘locked’ and can make daily tasks challenging.

Physiotherapy is an important part of your recovery from frozen shoulder. Although the timeline of injury may not change dramatically, physiotherapy will reduce pain and maximise your function for the duration of the condition. It is also associated with better outcomes in terms of pain, strength, and quality of life following the condition.

If you think you may have frozen shoulder, book an appointment today and take the first step toward regaining your mobility!
