awesome
Today I have a great very real world example of how heat training has positivity.
You see, out here in Portland the overnights can get quite cool, even during this baking patch of weather Australia is going through. One night recently even got to single digits (before heading to a day of 38!)
Anyway, I digress. I mostly exercise during the afternoon and that has meant a lot of plus 30 degrees running recently. Feeling okay and put together on them, but boy is it uncomfortable 🥵
So this morning when the sun isn't even up and it's about 13 outside I laced up and put together a smashing easy run with metrics far improved on how those afternoons go.
It's probably the run I needed right now. And it has served my confidence up a good healthy dose of happy.

parkrun
This past weekend I took a tour back out to Wellington for the
Event number 15, so I could see how they're getting along the path.
It was great to reconnect with the community and run the course.
As it's 200km from home, it ain't just a morning and day trip.
So when there I choose to stay at Ponto Falls reserve (free camping) and charge the car up for free at the Library (conveniently close to the parkrun and cafe they choose)
Event 275 for me

Hot
Someone once asked me how they might meet more women in their life, I said "have you tried painting wings on the wall and waiting for them to turn up?"
Joking of course, probably poorly as the temp outside in our part of the world is certified nuts right now.
Took a hydrating minded afternoon run today. Avoiding Garmins suggested activity by way of self preservation. Easy does it with lots of preparation.
If you're suffering a temperature problem today, I wish you all the best with your solutions

I wish I was running when I lived here closer. I feel like I would have been down harbour side every day

12 weeks
So after only 3 hours sleep Friday-->Saturday I was relatively ready for a good long sleep.
Mission accomplished and have begun my Sunday with a blissful long run in gentle rain. With plans to spend most of the rest of my day in the garden.
My true training plan for the April half marathon starts this week and whilst I have battled with inconsistencies for a good long while now I feel like I've gotten myself to a reasonable start point for build up.
As I review my last 4 weeks honestly, it is clear I can improve the way I apply myself in some very simple and small ways that will help.
I've got a few targets for this first four week block.
Mostly I think I have to change my thinking on my capacity for effort. So 75% of my time will be working with that as I train.
Happy Sunday pocket world.

storms
Was going to be an easy run today, but I was keeping a sharp eye on a gap in storms to get it done.
Literally half way around a loop, the first of the rumbles began. Turn back or go forward, the distance was the same. So an easy run turned tempo as I watched the storm window close.
Not so bad as I'm worried it wasn't worth the effort, but definitely not run as intended when I first stepped out.
I don't mind getting wet when I run, in fact I'd say I love rain running. But I draw the like when the spikey stuff ⚡⛈️🌩️gets involved.

hot
As I finished work later than normal, the garden was thirsty and the afternoon was warm.
All reasonable factors to bail on my running commitment.
But I didn't.
The schedule said tempo efforts, so that's what happened.
Choosing pace/time based tempo on varying gradient conditions (as opposed to say a heart rate threshold) teaches you how to manage the whole run I think. Pushing where it demands, recovery of sorts where it was possible.
I felt like I got a good result for my effort and hopefully it is some meaningful contribution to my muscle memory bank.

parkrun
So, I have visited the same town twice for parkrun and been able to get a second "J" !
used to run by the lake, then had to move up to Jindabyne Sport and Recreation (which is where I got my first J here on the hill of death.) because the lake filled up.
So when all the lakeside paths had been adjusted they could move back down to it's current location using their original name.
Super unique set of circumstances allowing the double J for the same town.
This course is far from flat (watch is reporting up to 140m of gain, might be some water interference with that number.)But certainly it's got elevation gain regardless.
Double out and back, you get to see everyone a few times around. Today the wind was hectic on the way out, so twice into the wind and finish with it at your back.
We ran into some people who were at Elara last weekend too. We joked, "see you next weekend'

On our way to complete a unique-ish event this weekend and stopped over in Queanbeyan for the night.
This heat is really worth avoiding when possible, I was up early with a topped up water bottle to go run a freedom parkrun on the Queanbeyan course.
A double out and back with a fair amount of incline. I did this course officially back in March 2019 as I started to hunt down my alphabet.
Running it super easy in the cool of the morning as the sun starts to rise is quite nice too.

overthinking
I likely put way too much thought into my really quite average running. But it's part of the activity and fun for me.
Today in the heat (it was 34 degrees when I stepped out) my conversation pace run felt actually much nicer than yesterdays warm up into tempo.
There's reasons of course. Yesterday I was 10 minutes of wondering how that harder effort might go. Almost run-braking my way through the easier effort. Shorter strides, more tension of sorts.
Today I knew that Garmins expectations of me were eminently achievable despite the temp and time, enabling a more relaxed stride with much better cadence.
It was warmer. And I needed that icey pole just as much as yesterday. But feeling much better about my activity on the whole.

ups and downs
I'm trying to trigger my motivation right now, to have it reset to how I might have approached my running in the past.
Truth is, it's hard.
Often enough at the moment I can take certain truths from my runs (like this past parkrun at or my Sunday long run).
My legs on these runs have come along for the activities no worries. They feel fine during, and have recovered just fine afterwards.
But it's a double edged sword in my complicated brain. Positivity that seems to prove that I should be able to run faster or more organised.
So the two wolves inside me rage at each other still.
Luckily I don't come to exercise/running from nothing and can reach back into my bank of understanding for perspective.
It's tough right now regardless
