When stress becomes constant, the nervous system can stay on high alert.
Over time, this impacts mood, memory, and motivation.

Just a reminder that if you have a question, you’d like answered next week, simply head over to the “Contact Us” page on my website (and as I mentioned last time, don’t worry too much about the wording) and submit your question.

For privacy reasons, I won’t be mentioning anyone’s name. So, if you’re worried your question might sound a little silly, please don’t be — you’re likely not the only one wondering! That said, if you do submit a silly question, I reserve the right to provide a slightly silly answer 😀.

Any responses will be general in nature.

As always, if you or someone you know would like to catch up for a chat, please feel free to reach out. I currently have short wait times.

If you, or someone you know, has been putting off getting support because of cost, please feel free to share this post.

💡 Did you know?

There’s often confusion about what Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSWs) do. Many people don’t realise they are Medicare/Commonwealth-recognised mental health providers who work alongside GPs, psychiatrists, and other health professionals.

Here are some facts, just in case you’ve ever wondered 😊

AMHSW – True / False

1. True/Myth: To become an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW), you must meet some of the highest training and supervision standards across all allied health professions.
✅ True – This includes completing additional mental health-specific training, extensive supervised clinical practice, and ongoing professional development, making the pathway to AMHSW one of the most rigorous across allied health.

2. True/Myth: AMHSWs can provide services under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), just like psychologists.
✅ True

3. True/Myth: Social workers and Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSWs) are the same.
❌ Myth – AMHSWs have completed additional mental health-specific training, supervised practice, and formal accreditation requirements. They are eligible for Medicare provider numbers to deliver focused psychological strategies.

4. True/Myth: AMHSWs can provide services funded through schemes including Chronic Disease Management plans, private health insurance, and WorkCover.
✅ True

5. True/Myth: AMHSWs are required to undertake ongoing professional development and clinical supervision throughout their careers.
✅ True

6. True/Myth: AMHSWs work with individuals only.
❌ Myth – They work with individuals, families, groups, and communities.

7. True/Myth: AMHSWs are trained to support challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD and more complex social and psychological issues.
✅ True

8. True/Myth: AMHSWs use evidence-based psychological strategies such as CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and mindfulness-based approaches.
✅ True

9. True/Myth: AMHSWs work collaboratively with medical professionals such as GPs and psychiatrists to support assessment, diagnosis, and intervention planning.
✅ True

10. True/Myth: Many people assume a psychologist is better trained to manage mental health concerns, including complex presentations.
✅ True – This assumption is common and largely reflects greater public familiarity with the title "psychologist". There is less public education about the role of AMHSWs, so psychologists are often the default, or the first-person people think to seek out when struggling with their mental health.

12. True/Myth: Complex mental health concerns require a specific profession.
❌ Myth – Complex presentations require appropriate training, experience, and a strong therapeutic relationship, and often involve a multidisciplinary team. The best outcomes usually come down to fit and expertise.

13. True/Myth: AMHSWs only have entry-level mental health training. ❌ Myth – Like psychologists, AMHSWs generally complete a minimum of six years (including university studies and supervised clinical placements) before becoming eligible to provide Medicare-funded services.

The Power of Writing It Down
Feeling overwhelmed at work?
Sometimes writing your worries down is enough to slow the spiral.
Clarity often follows expression.
From there, small next steps can become clearer.

Did you know?

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan under Medicare, you can choose which clinician you see. Some people think they have to wait for a specific provider named on their care plan, which can be frustrating if there’s a long waitlist.

If you decide to see a different clinician who’s a better fit or has shorter availability, we recommend letting your GP know before your first session so your treatment plan reflects the provider you’re seeing.

The Body Keeps Score
Sometimes some people think that stress is just in one's head. However, it can also show up in your sleep, your patience, your muscles and in your immune system.
Your body is often the first messenger.
Are you listening to it?

Ever wondered why you don’t handle stress like you used to — or why sometimes you cope better now than in the past?

Often, it comes down to your baseline.

Think of stress on a scale from 0–10. If your usual level sits around a 2 or 3, you’ve got more capacity to deal with life’s challenges when they pop up.

But when stress is ongoing — weeks or months of pressure, uncertainty, or emotional load — that baseline can slowly rise. Suddenly, what used to feel manageable feels overwhelming. Small things hit harder. Your fuse feels shorter.

People sometimes say:
“I used to handle so much more.”
or
“I feel overwhelmed by everything.”

That’s not weakness. It’s your nervous system doing its best while carrying too much for too long.

The good news? Baselines aren’t fixed. With rest, support, boundaries, and the right strategies, your system can settle again — and your capacity can rebuild over time.
