These numbers aren’t just stats—they’re families, friends, and neighbours.

And behind each of these figures is someone who needs support too.

That’s why we’re now running SMART Recovery Family & Friends groups in Hervey Bay and Maryborough 💙

These groups are here to help you learn how to cope, build boundaries, and reconnect with your own wellbeing — even when someone you love is struggling.

🎰 The 6 Stages of Change in Gambling Behavior 🎰

Breaking free from problem gambling isn’t just about willpower—it’s a journey through different stages of change. Whether you’re reflecting on your own habits or supporting someone else, understanding these stages can help.

1️⃣ Precontemplation – “I don’t have a problem.” At this stage, a person may not see their gambling as an issue and might ignore concerns from others.

2️⃣ Contemplation – “Maybe I should cut back.” Here, they start recognizing the negative impacts of gambling but may still feel unsure about changing.

3️⃣ Preparation – “I need to make a change.” They start making small steps—setting limits, seeking advice, or researching ways to quit.

4️⃣ Action – “I’m making changes now.” This is where real steps happen—self-exclusion, therapy, or joining a support group.

5️⃣ Maintenance – “I’m staying strong.” They actively avoid triggers, build healthier habits, and work to prevent relapse.

6️⃣ Relapse or Termination – Some may relapse, returning to gambling, but that doesn’t mean failure—just another chance to restart the process. Others may reach termination, where gambling no longer has control over their life.

💡 Change takes time, and every step forward matters. If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. You’re not alone. 💙
