The NHAA was incorporated in 1920 and is the oldest complementary medicine association in Australia. The NHAA has a long record of working behind the scenes for the interests of herbal medicine. At the "big picture" level, protecting and advancing the profession is important for the entire country and allows the public greater access to a viable and effective treatment option. This creates greater demand for the high standard of health care service provided by our practicing members. This work requires constant vigilance and long hours of effort by the Board of Directors. Involvement in various committees and discussion groups, and production of submission papers and media releases are among the many activities of the Board. We have an engaged and passionate membership base, with three active local chapters in Melbourne (), Sydney () and Qld ().

🌿 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐇𝐀𝐀

Our EO, Jacqui, recently visited the Southern Cross University Herbarium in Lismore – an incredible collection dedicated to medicinal plants and their role in both traditional and contemporary medicine.

An important part of the Herbarium’s work is herbal authentication, supporting research with pharmacognostic techniques such as botanical identification and microscopy. It also plays a vital role in housing voucher specimens – authentic plant material used in research – which are held in perpetuity and referenced globally by scientists.

👏 A big thank you to the team at SCU for welcoming NHAA. It’s inspiring to see the incredible work being done to preserve and authenticate medicinal plants, ensuring their knowledge and value continue to support evidence-based natural medicine.

Gordon Carruthers is one of Perth’s most experienced iridologists and naturopaths, with over 30 years in practice and more than 50,000 iridology assessments. Trained at the Perth Academy of Natural Therapies, he has lectured in iridology and herbal medicine, managed nutritional services for the Pharmacy 777 group, and now runs the well-established Perth Naturopathic and Herbal Clinic. Gordon combines evidence-based medicine with traditional healing arts, using his deep knowledge of iridology, sclerology, and homeopathy to guide patient care.
