Confessions of a yoga teacher… I am the queen of over thinking 😬

People are shocked when they find that out. They say things like
β€˜ But you are a yoga teacher, aren’t you supposed to have all this worked out?!’
The fact of the matter is, that I am a human first- and humans are chronic over thinkers! Thinking is our super power, but it can also be a weapon of mass destruction when not contained.

A recent study by a neurologist revealed that the brain doesn’t collapse from stress - it collapses from emotional overthinking.
He taught that stress isn’t what breaks the brain.
Rumination is.
The brain is built to handle intense pressure - but not endless loops of unprocessed thought.
Those loops keep the nervous system half-activated for hours, draining energy the way a device wastes battery in standby mode.

(The study: Post-stress rumination predicts HPA axis
responses to repeated acute stress by Danielle Gianferante et al., 2014)

His solution? Interrupt the thought-loops with the body
- anything that forces the nervous system into the present moment gives the brain a chance to reset.

Things he recommends (that all happen in a yoga class!)…

Humming or long exhales… YOGA βœ…
Walk up stairs or set of squats… YOGA βœ…
Shake out arms + legs… YOGA βœ…
Press your feet into the ground, feel your weight… YOGA βœ…
Look around and name 5 things you see… YOGA βœ…
Hands over heart + belly (slow breath)… YOGA βœ…


So, if you find yourself getting stuck in your head in micro-worry over thinking EVERYTHING, then move your body and interrupt the cycle (… so basically come to class πŸ€ͺ)

Shaking your body is one of the best ways to release tension.

The amazing wrote this about how it shows up in dogs, and why we should do it too!

β€œWhen a dog does a β€œshake-off,” it isn’t random, it’s actually a physiological discharge, which means the body is completing a stress cycle and returning toward regulation. Well, humans do this too.
Across mammals, the autonomic nervous system releases stored tension through physical discharge behaviors like shaking, trembling, shaking out the hands or arms, or doing small involuntary tremors after stress or heightened emotion. It’s the nervous system’s natural way of moving residual activation through and out of the body. Dogs express this through a full-body shake-off.
Humans express it through things like shaking their limbs, trembling during anxiety, or instinctively β€œshaking it out” when overwhelmed.
Both are normal. Both are healthy. Both are part of completing the stress cycle.”

So if you’ve been feeling it these last few days, take a moment and have a good shake and I dare you to do it without smiling… bet you can’t!
