"Sprains and Strains: First Aid Made Simple with RICE"

You’re walking down the stairs or playing a casual game of footy when suddenly—you roll your ankle. The sharp pain and swelling set in quickly, and you’re left wondering: How long will this take to heal? Would you know the steps to support recovery after an ankle injury?

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries, and while most heal well with the right care, rushing recovery or neglecting treatment can lead to long-term instability or repeated injury.

Signs and Symptoms of an Ankle Injury
📍 Pain, especially when bearing weight
📍 Swelling and bruising around the joint
📍 Stiffness or reduced range of motion
📍 Tenderness to touch
📍 In severe cases, inability to walk or deformity (possible fracture)

Immediate First Aid – RICE

For the first 48–72 hours, follow the RICE method.

✅ Why CPR Matters?

When the heart stops beating, blood and oxygen stop flowing to the brain and vital organs. Within minutes, permanent damage can occur. But CPR keeps oxygen moving until professional help arrives—giving the casualty their best chance of survival.

✅ CPR Basics Everyone Should Know

1. Check for danger and responsiveness (DRSABCD action plan).
2. Call 000 immediately for emergency help.

If not breathing normally, start CPR:

* Adults: 30 compressions (centre of chest, 5–6cm deep, 100–120 per minute) + 2 breaths.
* Children: 30 compressions (about 5cm deep, one or two hands) + 2 breaths.
* Infants: 30 compressions (2 fingers, about 4cm deep) + 2 gentle breaths.

Keep going until help arrives, an AED is available, or the person starts breathing normally.
