Our body and mind are like texting buddies, constantly sending messages back and forth. Sometimes nice messages… sometimes not so nice messages. Did you know non-acute pain (acute meaning pain that was from a recent injury) has a strong connection to stress and emotional wellbeing. Mindfulness, guided exercise movement, and breathwork can shift focus away from pain and promote relaxation.

Here at Breaking Boundaries, we have a fantastic team of Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists that can help teach you mind-body techniques to improve your pain management strategies.

Did you know exercise doesn’t just strengthen your body; it also boosts your happy chemicals? 🧠

Movement triggers four key hormones that regulate mood, motivation, and overall wellbeing:
💡 Dopamine: motivation & reward
🌞 Serotonin: mood & balance
🤝 Oxytocin: connection & bonding
🎉 Endorphins: euphoria & stress relief

The best part? Different types of exercise help boost each one. From strength training and cardio to group classes and physio sessions. 🙌

Whether you’re working towards a goal, moving gently through stretches, or simply finding joy in activity that feels right for you, every bit of movement gives your mind and body a natural lift.

In Australia one amputation is completed every hour on average, with over 50% of those facing the process due to the complications of diabetes and vascular disease.

Amputation is typically performed as a last option to save a life from a trauma, from a cancer, disease or infection. Amputation is one of the few medical outcomes in which the solution creates a permanent disability.

Amputees NSW is a fantastic support initiative for individuals and the broader community affected by limb differences. This Awareness week jump on and get involved in their community events, fundraising and volunteering opportunities.

One super exciting event that is happening in November in Newcastle is the Mobility Clinic on the waves! linked below.

This week is Dementia Action Week. Everyone’s experience of dementia is unique so we wanted to share some signs and symptoms of dementia.

Memory
You might find it harder to remember recent events, names of things and people. It might also get harder to make new memories.

Thinking
You might get more confused, have trouble concentrating, planning and problem-solving, struggle to complete everyday tasks, find it hard to think of the right word or express yourself, and find it hard to judge distances, directions and time.

Mood
You might find yourself feeling less motivated and social, more prone to depression, anxiety and agitation, or otherwise not yourself.

Behaviour
You might start saying or doing things that are out of character for you. You might become restless and wander and have more disturbed sleep.

Dementia is the second leading cause death for Australians. Provisional data suggests dementia will soon be the leading cause of death.

In 2025 there are an estimated 433,300 Australians living with dementia. Without a significant intervention, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to an estimated 812,500 by 2054.

An estimated 1.7 million people in Australia are involved in the care of someone living with dementia and 54% of people living in permanent residential aged care have dementia.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to take action early and educate yourself on the signs.

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness continued with the locals! In the Hunter we have an estimated 400 people living with SCI and we have two awesome local charities that support people living with a SCI; Stand for Spinal and Stronger Together for Spinal.

Stand for Spinal’s mission is to empower lives and restore freedom.
Stand For Spinal is not just a charity; it is a movement that stands for the unwavering belief that everyone deserves a chance at a life unburdened by the limitations of a spinal injury. Together, we stand for spinal health, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Stronger Together For Spinal’s mission is to provide comprehensive and compassionate support for those who have been affected by spinal cord injury, both directly and indirectly.

Their quest: for providing accessible transport at zero cost, but goes beyond just transportation. Their next goal is a fully equipped mobile nurse unit to bridge the gap between hospital and home.

Check out their websites for more information.

This week is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week, and we’re taking a moment to share some important statistics about SCI in Australia. Around 20,800 Australians are currently living with a spinal cord injury, with 1–2 new injuries occurring every single day. Only 29% of people are able to return to work post-injury, and the impact extends far beyond individuals, costing an estimated $3.7 billion each year in direct care and economic loss. Of those living with SCI, 58% have paraplegia and 42% have quadriplegia, while 11% of injuries happen while a person is at work. These numbers are a powerful reminder of why awareness, support, and research are so important in creating better outcomes for those living with SCI.
