Have you noticed a new face in the clinic recently? Welcome to the team Emily!

Emily is our new Therapy Assistant & Admin helper!

She comes to us as a first-year physiotherapy student who is here helping clients build strength, confidence, and independence in the clinic whilst also keeping everything smooth sailing, on our reception desk!

Having moved from her farm in Armidale, she loves exploring the city and the beautiful coastline. She loves all sport and music and is excited to bring her passions and new learnings into the clinic, meeting all of you and learning from our excellent practitioners.

Even when she’s not in the clinic, Em loves to help people and learn about the human body, so physio is an excellent area of study! In her spare time, Emily loves to get competitive, playing spike ball at the beach, learning how to surf and exploring the national parks surround Newy.

Make sure you give her a big warm welcome when you see her around!

Invisible disabilities deserve visible change.

Brain Injury Awareness Week (BIAW) is held annually to raise awareness of brain injury and its impact on everyday Australian’s. This is a time to reflect on how each of us can support and advocate for people living with a brain injury and continue to grow awareness and understanding throughout Australia.

When in the community it's important to ensure that you have a therapeutic team and a social community team around you to help navigate this, including a Neuro Psychologist, a Neuro Physiotherapist.

Welcome back to the BB team Helaina!

You might remember this friendly face, Helaina who we welcome back as a Therapy Assistant after a few years off.

With her passion and background in therapy assistance, dog training and support work she has come back to share her passion for connecting and building relationships with people and animals in the scope of rehabilitation! Helaina is always followed by her loyal border collie, Fletcher, that loves to assist connection and inspire movement.

When she’s not in the clinic, you can find her spending time in nature or at church, making people smile, and being surrounded by family, and friends, including the furry and feathered friends!

Make sure you say hello and welcome back next time you’re in the clinic!

What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

A functional disconnection or dysregulation in brain networks involved in movement, sensation, emotion, and cognition.

Common symptoms of FND include:
- Limb weakness or paralysis
- Non-epileptic seizures (dissociative seizures)
- Tremors or abnormal movements
- Speech or swallowing difficulties
- Sensory changes (numbness, tingling)

Causes of FND are complex and often involve a combination of:

Biological Factors
- Disrupted brain networks (seen on functional MRI)
- Abnormal patterns of brain activity affecting movement, sensation, or awareness
- Imbalance in how the brain processes threat or stress signals

Psychological Factors
- Past trauma (including physical, emotional, or sexual trauma)
- Anxiety, depression, or other psychological stressors
- Emotional conflicts

Social and Environmental Factors
- High-stress environments
- Social pressures or significant life changes
- Illness or injury that may trigger symptoms

If you are experiencing FND, please reach out so we can chat about where to go from here.

Liz is a physiotherapist, health coach and wellness educator who brings over 25 years of clinical, leadership, and movement-based experience. A registered health coach, rehabilitation Pilates instructor, and trauma-informed yoga therapist, Liz blends science with soul to guide individuals and groups toward healing, growth, and sustainable wellbeing.

Liz invites those she works with to show up fully, as they are and explore with curiosity rather than judgement. She sees every session as an opportunity to unlock self-awareness, to learn, to tap into resilience, and to reconnect with the body’s innate capacity to heal.

With firsthand experience navigating a functional neurological disorder (FND) since 2016, Liz teaches and leads from a place of lived empathy and practical wisdom. She relishes the challenge and reward of working with complex neurological and mind-body conditions, both functional and organic. She integrates current medical evidence and trauma-informed practices into her work, creating spaces that feel both grounded and transformative.

Above all, Liz is a connector, of people, ideas, and possibilities; helping others move from burnout to balance, from complexity to clarity, and from disconnection to deep presence.

Today is World Brain Day, it’s an important day where we talk about Neurological conditions and promote brain health around the world. Neurological disorders remain the top cause of years lost to disability and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Yet, many can be prevented, detected early, or effectively managed with proper lifestyle and care

The theme this year is “Brain Health for All Ages”, emphasising lifelong brain health, from pre‑conception to adulthood and older age. We aim to promote healthy living habits; from good nutrition, hydration and healthcare to exercise, quality sleep, and mental wellbeing. We need to continue to advocate for equitable access to diagnostics, care, therapies, and rehabilitation across all life stages. 🥰

Sam & Bee having some fun exploring high tone strategies using rhythmic passive stretching.

This technique isn’t just playful, it’s powerful. Rhythmic passive stretching can help regulate muscle tone, improve range of motion, and promote a sense of calm through repetitive, gentle movement. For those with high tone, these strategies support more fluid movement patterns and prepare the body for functional activities.
