While the world was going about its business this week, some incredible humans were doing incredible things.

And I got to help them.

hosted the 2024 satellite backyard championships in Perth this week.

For those who don't know, the backyard ultra format is a rapidly growing test of endurance and grit.

Runners have 1 hr to complete a 6.71km loop until they either refuse to carry on or time out on the loop.

No, they can't take a break and rejoin the race.

Yes, they only have the hr to complete it..the only rest breaks they get are whatever time they have left over at the end of the hour.

They must start on the hour and once they do, they CANNOT receive any further aid until they finish the loop. Which means they need a crew to prep drinks and food and keep kicking them out hour after hour.

63 nations around the world kicked off at 8pm on Saturday. Each team had a maximum of 15 of the best runners their country could field. There are qualifiers and best performance entries only.

Everyone Live streamed their events and lap on lap, spreadsheets were updated manually to feed into the master spreadsheet so we could all track performances.

10 of us, in teams of 5 tag teamed every 8 hrs to keep the whole thing ticking over. Some of us have a hard time stepping away. So as you can imagine, not a lot of sleep was had for the next 4 days.

My physio skills got called on for a variety of sore muscles. Usually hips and hammies! It was hard to leave so that I could get some rest and still function at the end of my shifts. None of us could leave on the last day.

But, with the aid of the entire community, our Aussie team managed to pip Team USA to take out 2nd place.. with local legend and former world record holder .gore.ultrarunner taking out the team gold medal and last person standing title.

But no-one was catching team Belgium. 3 runners carried on to set a new world record of 110 'yards' (previous record set by last year of 108 yards). All three decided to retire together rather than take away from the team achievement with a solo winner. It was magic to witness.

Oh, and we threw in a 1RM testing session on Tuesday night for funsies. 😆

738kms in 5 days with next to no rest.

Huge Coaching shout out to who took out 1st place at Heysen 70k trail Ultra. Some words from Shaun!

Had been running trails and Ultras for a few years now and decided to register for a miler.... whilst trying to get my head around tackling such a big step up for me I realised I had no real idea of what I was doing in terms of training and preparation required to get the job done. My other challenges also lay with the fact that I (much like everyone else) lead an incredibly busy family / work life, and time is not something I am in an abundance of. Any training I was doing had to provide me with the highest returns on my effort and that's when a quick Google search led me to find Susan's details on the Ultra Series website.

Getting going was super easy, Susan was awesome from the get go, took her time to get to know where I was at in terms of fitness, strength , speed etc and from there the plan was rolled out. Susan not only provided the program but also has helped in many other areas whether its' race prep, injury management, post race recovery, big picture planning (big one for me) and also reminding me that it's important not to sweat the small stuff, be kind to yourself and body, consistency is absolutely everything and most importantly - not trying to kill yourself in every session which is easy to do when being a runner training for a big event.

Fast track 4 months from when I first engaged Susan, I am so much fitter and stronger than I've ever been, somehow quite a bit faster, my headspace is clear (having a plan set out for you takes a huge load off) and confident (seeing such great results has built so much trust in the process) and I'm proud to say (and I still can't believe I'm; writing this almost a week after the event) I just won an actual UItra Trail Running event!!! (Heysen 70km - Uneffinbelievable!! :))

It's really cool to be in a position to provide such a positive endorsement of Susan and tell everyone just how much of an amazing Ultra Trail Running coach she is! The best part is I now have the results to prove it!! Most importantly, I'm about 5 weeks away from the big event I have been preparing for and even though I'm still sh^ #*ting myself - I know very well that I am prepared and ready to tackle this behemoth in my best condition and I know I will get the job done thanks to Susan!

After 4 years of amazing experiences and working with amazing people, I've made the decision to move away from private practice.

A few weeks ago, I was offered a really exciting opportunity that I couldn't pass up.

I'll be moving into a Rehab Consultant role for a young consultancy based in Sydney as they grow into the WA market.

It's a huge change but, I'm excited, as it will be an evolving role as the WA business grows.

I'll still be running X2 group strength sessions a week from Aspire in Osborne Park and running coaching (obviously) and I'm sure I'll be able to work in some one-on-one strength coaching sessions as well (by appointment) outside of business hours.

As much as I love what I do, I feel this is the right move for me at this time. Don't worry, you'll still see me around events and hopefully this will now mean, I'll have more brain space to put into my own training as well.

Huge thank you to all my loyal clients who have supported me and believed in me during a couple for very tumultuous years. Without you, I'm not sure I would have made it this far.

The winds of change are here, good, bad or indifferent, there's new adventures to be had.

Thank you so much for your understanding and support. My last day in the clinic will be next week on 23rd October before I transition into the new role the following week.

Please reach out if you have any questions!

Many thanks once again

Susan

Just to clarify!

A friend asked if I was physioing in my new home at !

The answer is yes!!! For all your injury management, strength coaching, body maintenance needs, I'm here and available.

There's a fantastic gym on site as well as coffee in the mornings and a recovery hub (infrared sauna and ice bath) that can be booked through Aspire for non gym members.

Strength classes are available with me with a heavy emphasis on strength for running Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.45pm. But so are one-on-one coaching sessions for beginners.

Pre and post race massage and dry needling is also available.

And of course, if you're looking for a running coach who can cover all those bases, I've got you covered. 😉

Check out www.thelongrunphysio.com for appointments and further details.

See you soon!

Coaching shout out!

Huge kudos and high fives to .ridz for notching up 6 laps at Birdy's Backyard ultra. Not an A race, just a training run to get time on feet before taking on her third 200 miler of the year over at Unreasonable East 200 and 100 miler in Far North Queensland in 3 weeks time.

Unfortunately Karin didn't finish her second race after twisting her knee and hobbling through 100kms for a total of 140km before deciding to pull the pin.

Rehab on track, she then succumbed to COVID. Being super cautious of heart rate spikes, all she could manage for nearly three weeks was walks and some very easy run walks until it stabilised.

But, she dedicated herself to her strength training X2 per week to make up the shortfall. We two weeks to go, the body is coming good.

You've got this Karin! So glad I get to be there to see you smoke this beast. ♥️

Being injured doesn't mean you can't do anything, sometimes it just means you have to do things differently..

Coaching Shoutout

1. Shaun Butterworth took on his first 100km race at Ultra Adelaide a couple of weeks ago as a qualifier for GPT 100 miler. Even though we haven't been working together long, he took to training in a more structured way quickly and smoked his first 100k in 14:14:05. Sadly, the power went out just as Shaun was coming into the finish, so the one photo he has from the day is the first one (he tells me he's the one in the blue shorts. :))

2. Willah Edmonds (pictured with her youngest G) - 2 weeks ago, Willah and some friends ran some Parkruns, on the hour (backyard format style) until she had enough, and knocked out an impressive 60k total. This weekend, she backed that up and smashed out Yaberoo Trail Ultra 50k in 9:30:52 for the second year in a row. Despite a hectic life as a mum, teacher and living on a property, she always gives everything she does, a solid crack.

3. Juliet King - Juliet is no stranger to the ultra-running scene in WA. Despite being one of the youngest ultra runners on course on Saturday at Yaberoo Trail Ultra, at 14 she exhibits more grit and determination than most adults twice her age. She knocked out a respectable 7:27:52. Though focus this year has shifted to her newest passion - basketball, she still manages to get these long runs done. Oh, and incidentally, she backed up her 50k with an impressive season-high score of 31 points and lead point scorer for her team the next day.

CLIENT SHOUT OUT

A big congrats to Andrew and his son Devlin who participated in Yaberoo Trail Ultra on Saturday. Both Devlin and dad Andrew ran the 25km event. I've had the pleasure of helping them both manage some niggles before going into this run.

"...thanks again for your help with both Devlin and me. Made a real difference and let us have an enjoyable run at Yaberoo this afternoon, rather than nursing pain and injuries the entire course!" Andrew N.

If you've got some niggles that you've been hoping would just go away with rest, (hot tip, they'll just lay dormant until you start again) or they're holding you back from progressing (we just may need to tweak what you're doing), then book in and see me. The sooner you get on top of injuries and niggles, the shorter the layoff from training or just doing what you love. There's no need to just put up with it and hope it goes away!

Head on over to www.thelongrunphysio.com for appointment times.
