While the world was going about its business this week, some incredible humans were doing incredible things.
And I got to help them.
hosted the 2024 satellite backyard championships in Perth this week.
For those who don't know, the backyard ultra format is a rapidly growing test of endurance and grit.
Runners have 1 hr to complete a 6.71km loop until they either refuse to carry on or time out on the loop.
No, they can't take a break and rejoin the race.
Yes, they only have the hr to complete it..the only rest breaks they get are whatever time they have left over at the end of the hour.
They must start on the hour and once they do, they CANNOT receive any further aid until they finish the loop. Which means they need a crew to prep drinks and food and keep kicking them out hour after hour.
63 nations around the world kicked off at 8pm on Saturday. Each team had a maximum of 15 of the best runners their country could field. There are qualifiers and best performance entries only.
Everyone Live streamed their events and lap on lap, spreadsheets were updated manually to feed into the master spreadsheet so we could all track performances.
10 of us, in teams of 5 tag teamed every 8 hrs to keep the whole thing ticking over. Some of us have a hard time stepping away. So as you can imagine, not a lot of sleep was had for the next 4 days.
My physio skills got called on for a variety of sore muscles. Usually hips and hammies! It was hard to leave so that I could get some rest and still function at the end of my shifts. None of us could leave on the last day.
But, with the aid of the entire community, our Aussie team managed to pip Team USA to take out 2nd place.. with local legend and former world record holder .gore.ultrarunner taking out the team gold medal and last person standing title.
But no-one was catching team Belgium. 3 runners carried on to set a new world record of 110 'yards' (previous record set by last year of 108 yards). All three decided to retire together rather than take away from the team achievement with a solo winner. It was magic to witness.
Oh, and we threw in a 1RM testing session on Tuesday night for funsies. 😆
738kms in 5 days with next to no rest.
