đŸ‘¶ WHY BABIES CRY 😭
Crying is a baby’s main way of communicating. It’s how they let you know they’re hungry, tired, uncomfortable, overstimulated, or simply in need of closeness and reassurance.

Most babies experience periods of fussiness, particularly in the first few months of life. While this can feel worrying or exhausting for parents, it is often a normal part of infant development as babies adjust to life outside the womb and learn how to regulate their needs.

If you’re feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or simply want reassurance, our dedicated General Practitioners are here to help. Please call us to book an appointment, we’re here to support you and your baby every step of the way.

✹ Welcome Ainsley Read – Clinical Psychologist ✹

We’re delighted to welcome Ainsley Read, Clinical Psychologist, to the team.

Ainsley brings over 10 years of experience working in public mental health, supporting children, parents, and families through times of overwhelm, stress, and emotional difficulty. She has a special interest in early parent–infant attachment and has completed specialised training in attachment-focused approaches, including the Circle of Security program.

Having worked in early intervention services at Perth Children’s Hospital, and as a parent herself, Ainsley understands how challenging the transition to parenthood can be. She offers a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space where parents feel supported, heard, and understood.

Ainsley will be available for appointments from Monday, 12 January, with clinics running on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.

đŸ€± World Breastfeeding Week | FUN FACTS
The health impacts of breastfeeding for babies extend well beyond the first 12 months. Breastfed children are less likely to become overweight or obese and have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Breastfeed as much as you can, for as long as you can, to protect your child’s health.

đŸ€±đŸŒ International Breastfeeding Week – Staff Spotlight: Meet Sharon Perrella

We’re proud to shine a light on the incredible Sharon Perrella, one of our dedicated lactation consultants at Mums and Bubs Clinic.

Sharon is not only a registered nurse, midwife and IBCLC, but also holds postgraduate qualifications in neonatal intensive care, child and family health nursing, and has completed her PhD with the Human Lactation Research Group at UWA.

With over 15 years of NICU experience, a decade in private lactation practice, and a rich background in research, teaching and volunteer work, Sharon offers families a truly comprehensive and compassionate approach to breastfeeding support.

She’s also an accredited Neurodevelopmental Care (NDC) practitioner, giving her a deeper understanding of the big picture when it comes to infant care.

Outside of the clinic, Sharon is a proud mum of three young adults and loves spending time outdoors, cheering on her kids at sport, going for bush walks, and cooking up a storm.

We’re so lucky to have Sharon on our team. 💛 Appointments with her are available at both Mums & Bubs Clinic and Western Obstetrics.

đŸ€± World Breastfeeding Week | FUN FACTS
Returning to paid work with a breastfed baby is often easier than expected. For babies that are eating family foods, they often need less breast milk during the day. While at work, mums can usually pump just a few times to maintain their milk supply and continue their breastfeeding journey. Breast milk protects babies from infections and this is particularly important when they start child care.

đŸ‘¶ Staff Spotlight | World Breastfeeding Week đŸ€±
As part of World Breastfeeding Week, we're shining a light on our amazing lactation consultants, our compassionate experts helping families every day at Western Obstetrics and Mums and Bubs Clinic.

Today we’d love to introduce you to Stephanie Emmons, Midwife and IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).

Stephanie completed her nursing degree in 2013 and began her career at Royal Perth Hospital. While working there, she also studied midwifery through ECU, training at King Edward Memorial Hospital. Since 2017, Stephanie has worked across all areas of maternity care at St John of God Midland, from labour and birth to postnatal care and the neonatal nursery.

Her passion for supporting others has extended beyond the hospital too, volunteering with Canteen, a children’s cancer support foundation, and even travelling to Africa in 2019 to volunteer as a midwife educator.

After becoming a mum herself in 2020, Stephanie's passion for breastfeeding support and education deepened. She understands firsthand how beautiful, and challenging, this journey can be. Now, as a fully qualified lactation consultant, she brings both personal empathy and professional knowledge to every appointment.

Stephanie is available for lactation consultations at both Western Obstetrics and Mums and Bubs Clinic. Whether you're just starting out, experiencing bumps along the way, or simply looking for support, she's here to help.

đŸ€± It’s World Breastfeeding Week! | 1st–7th August
This year’s theme is “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems” - a message that’s at the heart of everything we do at Western Obstetrics and Mums and Bubs Clinic.

We live and breathe this theme by offering personalised, evidence-based care and building a village of support around each family. From antenatal education to postnatal follow-up and expert lactation care, we are here to help make your breastfeeding journey as supported and sustainable as possible.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing helpful information about breastfeeding and introducing you to our wonderful lactation consultants and the services available at both our clinics.

To kick things off, here’s a beautiful moment captured with Lactation Consultant Sharon Perrella, and patients Sarah and baby Theodore 💛

We were thrilled to welcome Sarah and Theodore back to Western Obstetrics for his 4-month immunisations. In the early weeks, Sarah faced ongoing breastfeeding challenges, but with gentle guidance and support from Sharon, things turned around. Today, they’re both thriving and enjoying a smooth and happy breastfeeding relationship.

If you’re in need of support, know that our lactation team is here to help, with expertise, empathy and a commitment to walking alongside you.
