My whole life Iâve heard people say things like, âDonât worry about me, Iâve got thick skinâ or itâs been said to me âYouâve got thick skin Amy.â
And yes there was a time when thatâs all I knew.
Just get on with it. Donât talk about it. Itâs no big deal. There are worse problems in the world.
But hereâs the truthâŠ
âThick skinâ is surface level.
On the outside you look resilient and unstoppable, but underneath the resentment builds, your nervous system is exhausted, your leg is jiggling constantly and you lose your s**t when the kids donât listen.
Emotional Intelligence is completely different.
Itâs allowing yourself to feel shame, sadness, anger, fear and knowing youâre safe to feel them.
Itâs expressing whatâs real instead of suppressing it.
Itâs regulating your nervous system, giving yourself grace and showing yourself compassion.
Itâs taking full accountability for your emotions and your triggers without blame.
Itâs expressing and honoring whatâs true for you.
Your feelings always make sense.
But do you understand why you feel them?
This is the work I teach in my 1:1 coaching, couples courses and parenting programs.
When you live and parent from radical responsibility, emotional intelligence, grace and compassion your relationships thrive.
You donât need a thicker skin.
You need to learn how to feel.
