Why rest isn’t always the best thing for back pain

First instinct when your back flares up? Stop everything and rest. We get it.
But for most common back pain, prolonged rest can actually slow your recovery. When we stop moving, muscles weaken, joints stiffen, and the nervous system can become more sensitised to pain, not less.
What actually helps is appropriate movement. Gentle, supported, progressive. Not pushing through intense, sharp pain but not lying still for days either.
This is why we don’t just treat the flare-up. We help you understand what your back needs to feel better and stay better long-term.
Back pain that keeps coming back? Come in and let’s look at the full picture. 📩

Why strengthening 🏋️‍♂️ AND releasing tension 🧘 both matter

We hear it a lot: “Should I be stretching or strengthening?”
Usually both. Here’s why:
Tight, overworked muscles often feel like they need to be stretched. But sometimes that tension is your body compensating for weakness somewhere else. Stretching alone won’t fix that.
On the flip side, jumping into strengthening when your body is restricted and holding tension can reinforce poor movement patterns and lead to injury.
The sweet spot is treating the restriction and building the strength to support it long-term. That’s exactly the approach we take. Hands-on treatment combined with the right movement advice for your body.
Not sure where to start? That’s what we’re here for. 🙌

The truth about “cracking”: what that sound actually is

That satisfying pop during a treatment? It’s not your bones cracking. 🦴
It’s actually a tiny gas bubble releasing from the fluid inside your joint called a cavitation. It happens when a joint is moved quickly through its range, causing a brief drop in pressure.
Does it mean something “went back into place”? Not exactly.
What it does signal is that the joint moved often through a range it had been restricted in. That movement is what helps reduce tension and improve mobility.
No crack doesn’t mean no result, either. Plenty of effective manipulations are completely silent. 😄
Now you know what to tell people when they wince at the sound. 😄

Three heads are better than one! 🧠✨

There’s been a lot of "brain-storming" happening at the clinic lately. After attending the recent Osteopath Summit, Jade has been busy sharing fresh perspectives and new techniques with Aaron and Lachlan. We love a good case study, and seeing these three collaborate on the latest evidence-based research is what makes the McKinnon Osteo team so unique. We’re obsessed with the "why" behind your pain so we can provide a better "how" for your recovery.

Got a ni**le that won't go away? Or maybe you’re just overdue for a maintenance check? We’ve got you covered.

Jade spent the weekend in beautiful Cape Schanck at The Osteopathic Summit. It was one of the best conferences I’ve attended in a long time!

There’s something pretty special about being in a room full of experienced Osteopaths who are so open and generous in sharing their knowledge. So many practical insights, ideas, and different perspectives that I’m already excited to start integrating into practice.

A real highlight was also reconnecting with uni friends from 20 years ago, a good reminder of how far we’ve all come (and how much we’re still learning).

Looking forward to bringing this fresh knowledge back to the clinic and sharing it with both my clients and our team.

Jade spent the weekend away at The Physio Symposium on the Gold Coast. So many wonderful speakers sharing some valuable insights. A great weekend of learning, reflecting, catching up with old friends and having fun! What a great event 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 🥇🥇🥇
