If you're a parent, educator, therapist, clinician or support worker for autistic children, I bet you've come across this story at some point!
Story of Arlo recurs time and time again, as we fail to understand and accommodate needs for autistic kids.
Its not uncommon to see AuDHD young ones being pushed out of mainstream classrooms due to aggressive behaviour!
So what does that behaviour teach us?
Its a communication...it tells us their nervous system is in Survival Mode! In frequent or constant "fight or flight" mode. This occurs as the world around them is changing too quickly, unpredictably and with overstimulated environments in school or educational settings. Often one to one support and Coregulation is not possible!
A nervous system feeling unsafe can not learn! It first needs safety then connection to be able to engage!
When we provided the connection, slower transitions, fewer demands, adjusted times, room for movement, resets for dysregulation not consequences then little Arlo could learn to be calm again!
