Let’s Talk About Bowel Health in the Elderly 🚨

It might not be the most glamorous topic, but regular bowel movements are a vital sign of health — especially in older adults. As we age, changes in diet, medication, mobility, and hydration can all slow things down.

🛑 Constipation in the elderly isn’t just uncomfortable — it can lead to serious issues like confusion, reduced appetite, urinary problems, or even dangerous bowel blockages.

✅ Keep an eye out for these signs:
• Fewer than 3 bowel movements per week
• Hard, dry stools
• Straining or discomfort when going
• Abdominal pain or bloating

💡 Simple ways to help:
• Encourage plenty of water
• Add fibre-rich foods (fruit, veg, wholegrains)
• Keep moving when possible
• Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using laxatives

A healthy gut is key to a healthier, happier life — don’t ignore the signs. 💩💚

Because it’s Friday we all need to end the working week with some humour (except me as I’ll still be holding down the fort for my clients) ❤️
If you can’t laugh at the day then you’re never going to survive the industry 😂

Did You Know? UTIs in Older Adults Can Be Dangerous!

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in the elderly — but they can be far more serious than many realise. Unlike younger people, older adults may not show typical symptoms like burning or urgency. Instead, UTIs can cause confusion, falls, fatigue, or even hallucinations.

Left untreated, they can lead to serious complications like sepsis.

👵 If an older loved one suddenly seems confused, drowsy, or “just not themselves,” don’t dismiss it — ask about a possible UTI.

✅ Early detection = faster recovery
❗ Always seek medical advice if you’re unsure

You may have noticed it’s been a little quiet on this page lately, and I wanted to take a moment to check in.

Over the past few months, some of my wonderfulp clients have needed a bit of extra support—and as always, they are my top priority. This has meant spending more time out in the community and a little less time online.

While I haven’t been posting as often, I’m still here, still working hard, and still deeply passionate about providing quality care to those who need it most.

Thank you for your patience and understanding—and stay tuned, I’ll be sharing more updates and insights again very soon! 💛

It’s been an incredibly uplifting couple of weeks! My doggo and best snuggle buddy overcoming a slipped disc. A client recovering in hospital. Taking on a new client. And all the usual homely duties that need to be attended to. But Junior is now good 👍 My client is on the mend 🥰 I’m having loads of fun with my new client and witnessing remarkable progress in their health and their goals ❤️ It’s a juggle that I love and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to spend my time with these amazing clients.

Anxiety can be a big part of someone living with Alzheimer's, but sometimes taking a chance can be incredibly empowering. Going to places that they know and are comfortable with can be calming, but yesterday I took a leap of faith and went somewhere new with my client and it was truly uplifting. You see, this particular person comes from a musical background and little did I know that there was live music being played, which was a perfect coincidence. Busker, open air, not huge crowds - it was a total win. Looks like Preston Market on a Wednesday is now on our rotation of places to visit, and I couldn't be more thrilled.

THIS IS AN APPRECIATION POST:

Being a solo support worker can be incredibly challenging, but one of the most remarkable aspects is the sense of community that comes with it. When my little doggo fell ill over the weekend, I had to be there for him, and without hesitation, my clients and their families stepped up to cover my shifts. I'm deeply grateful for their understanding and support, and it's a powerful reminder that family whether blood or chosen is everything and that we're all in this together, uplifting each other in times of need.

As a local Support Worker my transportation is absolutely vital to be able to reach my people. So when my clutch in my car failed, the amazing team at Autoflow came to my rescue working overtime to get me back on the road quickly. I am forever grateful. Support your local businesses and they will support you.❤️🚙

What many people may witness is two individuals trying to keep cool in the face of extreme weather. What they may overlook, however, is my role in empowering my client to rediscover swimming, lost to Alzheimer's, by providing guidance, acknowledging his achievements, and helping him build confidence to overcome anxiety and self-doubt.
