🌿 NAIDOC Week 2025 | 6–13 July 🌿

This NAIDOC Week, we honour and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2025 theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”, calls us all to listen deeply and stand alongside First Nations people as they continue to share stories, culture, and resilience.

At Northside Natural Health, we acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land we work and gather on, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

May this week encourage us all to learn, reflect, and walk gently on Country.

What is Castor Oil?
🌿💧
Castor oil is a thick, plant-based oil made from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). It’s been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its powerful healing, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties.

✨ Rich in ricinoleic acid, castor oil is known to:
-Boost circulation
-Calm inflammation
-Support lymphatic flow

It’s most commonly used topically as part of a castor oil pack—applied to the abdomen with a heat pack to support period pain, digestion, and detox.
Fun Fact - It's good for all types of pain and blood stagnation, not just period pain!

🌿Want to learn how to use castor oil ? Book an appointment with our acupuncturist, Kylie Stabler.

✨ Castor Oil Packs ✨

Castor oil packs are a gentle, time-tested way to support your cycle—especially if you deal with cramping, clotting, or bloating before your period.
Here’s how they help:
🌿 Improves circulation to the uterus
💧 Reduces inflammation + stagnation
🧘‍♀️ Eases tension and promotes relaxation
♻️ Supports detox pathways leading into your period

How to use:
💡Avoid during menstruation, pregnancy, or over broken skin.
Apply warm castor oil over your lower abdomen (just below your belly button), cover with a cloth, then place a heat pack on top. Rest for 30–45 minutes. Do this a few times in the week before your period starts—but skip it during bleeding.

This simple ritual can help your body prepare for a smoother, less painful cycle. ✨

Period Pain?

Cramps that knock you out for days? It doesn’t have to be that way.
Here are some simple, natural tips to ease period pain:

🌿 Warm it up – Use a heat pack on your belly or lower back to relax cramps and improve blood flow.

🥣 Ditch the cold – Avoid cold drinks and raw foods during your period. In TCM, cold can cause stagnation and worsen cramps.

🧘‍♀️ Gentle movement – Light walking, stretching, or yoga can ease tension and help Qi flow more freely.

⚡TENS machine - A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) uses gentle electrical pulses to block pain signals from reaching your brain and encourage your body to release natural painkillers called endorphins.

🫖 Try herbs or acupuncture – TCM has beautiful tools for supporting smoother, less painful cycles over time.

💤 Rest when your body asks – Your period is your body’s invitation to slow down. Listen in.

🐮Avoiding Cow's dairy - Dairy may increase prostaglandin production - hormone-like substances that cause uterine contractions and pain during menstruation.

Chronic period pain isn't "just part of being a woman" — it's a sign your body needs a little extra support. Let’s work on it together 💛

📖TCM Terminology - Wind📖

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), keeping your neck covered—especially during windy or cold weather—is important because the nape of the neck (specifically the area called "Wind Gate") is considered a vulnerable point where external pathogens like Wind, Cold, and Damp can enter the body.

Here’s why:
🌀 Wind is seen as the "spearhead" of illness
In TCM, Wind is often the carrier for other pathogens (like Cold or Heat), and it tends to strike quickly—causing chills, headaches, stiff neck, or the start of a cold.

🧣 The neck and upper back are less protected
This area has less muscle and fat, making it easier for Wind and Cold to “invade” if it’s exposed.

🥶 Prevention is key
By simply keeping your neck warm with a scarf or high collar and protect your and lower back and kidney area by keeping it covered. As much as we love a midrift, especially when it's breezy or cold out, you’re protecting your body’s natural defenses (Wei Qi) and helping prevent illness before it starts.

📖TCM Terminology 📖

Ever heard an acupuncturist say you have “dampness” or “wind”?
Traditional Chinese Medicine has its own unique language—and yes, some of the terms can sound a little quirky if you're hearing them for the first time!

Here’s a quick translation of a few TCM classics:
🌧️ Dampness – Think of it like a heavy, sluggish feeling in the body. It can show up as bloating, brain fog, or feeling tired and heavy. This can also show up as phlegm or nodules like fibroids/cysts
💨 Wind – No, not that kind of wind! In TCM, wind refers to sudden changes or movement—like headaches that come and go or an itchy rash that moves around. Wind can also cause acute neck pain.
🔥 Hot – Not just a fever! "Heat" can show up as inflammation, irritability, red skin, or even bad breath.
❄️ Cold – Cold in the body can mean stiffness, pain that improves with warmth, or digestive sluggishness.

It might sound funny to some, but these concepts help us understand what's going on beneath the surface and guide how we bring your body back into balance.
