This week, alongside our recent newsletter, we are spotlighting the importance of the Medical Education Officer (MEO) role. We spoke to Jerry Tumney, MEO at Goulburn Valley Health, who shares her reflections on the vital role MEOs play in supporting prevocational doctors.

She illustrated that MEOs are instrumental to Victorian health services: providing and advocating for prevocational doctor support, working to improve the quality of education and training whilst ensuring compliance for accreditation and acting as a liaison between junior and senior staff.

“It is always an honour and pleasure to have played a small part in their training journey.”

How did the Medical Education Officer (MEO) role come to be — and how has it shaped medical education in Victoria?

In our latest edition of PMCV Insights, we take a closer look at the origins of the MEO role — from an emerging concept over 20 years ago, to an established, indispensable position within Victorian health services.

Featuring an interview with Susie Sangas, Victoria’s first and longest-serving MEO, and fellow MEO Jerry Tumney, we explore how this role has evolved to support junior doctors, strengthen medical education programs, and contribute to better patient care across the state.

PMCV are pleased to share the artwork for our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. The artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Jordan Lovegrove represents the learning journey of prevocational doctors as they begin their careers, supported by many people and organisations along the way.

The large central pathway symbolises the rite of passage - the transition from student to health professional. Along this path are meeting places representing the many stakeholders who provide guidance, support, and learning opportunities, including PMCV, supervisors, peers, cultural mentors, and the broader medical community. PMCV walks alongside prevocational doctors as they transition from student to practitioner, providing a structured developmental pathway that ensures they are equipped, supported, and guided throughout their early careers.

The bush medicine leaves throughout the artwork reflect the ongoing importance of healing, growth, and cultural knowledge in healthcare.

The growth of trees represents personal and professional development, as doctors grow stronger and more capable with experience.

The interconnected elements show the importance of working together, cultural safety, and collaboration in supporting each doctor’s journey, aligning with PMCV’s commitment to reconciliation and building a culturally inclusive workforce.

Yesterday the PMCV team celebrated the start of NAIDOC Week by attending the 2025 Flag Raising event in Federation Square.

As we continue along our reconciliation journey, being welcomed to country by local elders and hearing the stories of the 2025 Victorian NAIDOC Award winners as well as listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples shared cultures and experiences, allowed us to reflect on this year's NAIDOC theme of ' The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy'.
