✨ Safety ✨
“the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. It encompasses physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, ensuring that individuals feel secure and free from harm.”
At little bird flies, we believe that cultivating safety in our body is integral to a woman’s sense of empowerment and well-being. When we feel safe in our body, we can better connect with our emotional needs, trust our instincts and establish healthy boundaries with ourselves and those around us.
Feeling safe allows us to be vulnerable, open ourselves up to the unknown and roar: be raw.
Melissa has a deep understanding and passion for working with women and understanding their unique needs for safety. Understanding how they navigate and process the world, their needs and emotions so, together you can begin to nurture you and your body’s needs to feel safe.

✨ Trust ✨
“The firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something. It involves confidence in the integrity or character of a person, as well as the expectation that they will act in a way that is beneficial or supportive.” ✨
Our bodies are a vessel of deep communication and wisdom. As we begin to listen to and honour our body’s needs, we create a reciprocal relationship that allows the mind and body to dance in time with deep integrity, trust and love. When we learn to trust ourselves, we find the courage to sink a little deeper and surrender into the journey that is motherhood.

The power of a mother entering the birth portal in complete trust of herself and her baby is undeniable. She has nothing left to do but to surrender as she traverses the birth from maiden to mother.

It is time to no longer ignore your body’s whispers.
It is time to step into the uncomfortable, shine light on the hurt and hold deeply.
Your body is NEVER trying to hurt you.
All it asks of you is that you listen, hold closely and love deeply.
Trust yourself mumma.

xoxo
Melissa

🌞 Do you get sunlight first thing in the morning with your bub? 🌞
What does sunlight first thing in the morning do?
It helps them and you to regulate your circadian rhythm- our wake-sleep body clock dictated by light and releases hormones and regulates your body temperature at certain times of the day.

It is A clock that runs on the rise and setting of the sun 🌞
“Your circadian timing system is regulated by the suprachiasmatic nuclear, a small group of nerve cells found I. The hypothalamus of the brain. The hypothalamus is considered to be the master gland of your body’s hormonal system. It controls your body’s hunger, thirst, fatigue, body temperature and sleep cycles by acting as the master clock” (Stevenson, Shawn).
Light signals your body and specifically the hypothalamus to WAKE UP, which triggers the production of daytime hormones such as cortisol and serotonin (happy hormone).
If you don’t get enough natural light during the day and are exposed to light (artificial) light at night this can very much impact your baby’s ability to sleep.
Which is why it is also important to reduce the use of artificial light after sunset by using red lights and reducing the blue light exposure through electronic devices so that we can allow melatonin (our sleep hormone) to be produced. Melatonin is naturally produced by our bodies as day turns to night. It optimises the quality of our sleep and thus allows us to have the most restful sleep. 😴
So open your blinds in the morning if you are having a little lay in together or get outside and lie on the grass in the early morning light and sun. 🌞🌸

✨The masculine in the birth space.✨

How can you create a container of safety and security?

🙌🏻 Know and understand your purpose in the birth space.
🙌🏻 Do this by having clear and honest communication with mum in the lead-up to her labour and birth.
✨ How does she want you to be present in the birth space so that she can let go, surrender, soften and open into the depths of the spiritual, physical and mental containers that will consume her?

Understand that you need to be:

🤍 Emotionally present and stable.

✨ Have the ability to stand, hold and nurture her in the space of complete rawness: a space in which you will see her pain and her struggles ooze from her entire being-to not react but to just hold is a sign of complete trust and presence of the mature masculine.

✨ Understand that nothing is wrong with her discomfort, understand that this rawness and her primal roar is a right of passage and a sign of a woman in her deepest power. ✨ Know that you are not here to “fix” her, or take away her pain and become the hero of the story.
✨ You are here to be her strength and her security. Don’t let her discomfort overcome you so that you “need” to fix her so you can “fix” your own pain and discomfort.

🤍 Physically capable and resilient.

✨ You are here for her every need.
Every moment of weakness, of collapse and search for external strength or pillar. YOU are there.

You are there to hold,
to stand still,
to dance and to weave your masculine energy throughout.

You are there to hold steady, to place pressure to her sacrum, to squeeze her hips, to sift the rebozo and to help her move in and out of positions when she needs.

You are there to read, and to understand her every move, moan and breath.

And when she doesn’t need you, you are there holding space, holding still and holding the love and the security and the trust that you have between the two of you and your baby.

You are there to step in without her asking, you are there to be present and to know when you are needed and when you are not.

You are there
To hold still,
To hold safety and security
To watch on in awe of the sacred feminine in all her beauty.

Ever experienced “p*e fear”?

We’ve all been there, right? You’re in a public bathroom, doing your thing, and then the whole group of girls in the corner goes silent. Suddenly, it feels like you’re on stage in a high school musical with everyone watching. Or how about staying over at your Tinder date’s place and you need to p*e, but you’re terrified he’ll hear? Ladies, let me tell you—if anyone p*es or poops without making a sound, they’re the weird ones! Peeing and pooping are not silent activities. But back to the point—you end up tense, cramping, and your body’s like, “Nope, not happening!”

So what does all this have to do with giving birth?

When you’re uncomfortable or unsafe in your birthing environment, it’s the same thing! The muscles we use to p*e are the same ones that need to relax and open for birth. When you add stressors—like slamming doors, loud noises, or a parade of doctors and midwives in and out—it causes your body to tense up, slowing down labor or even stopping it altogether.

If you’re expecting, take some time to think about who you want in your birth space. Surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and at ease. Have a conversation with your caregiver about keeping your room peaceful and free from distractions. And don’t forget to ask your birth partner to communicate your preferences to the midwife at every shift change.

Your birth space is important—you might spend a lot of time there, so make it as comfy and calming as possible. Think pillows and blankets from home, dim lighting, essential oils, and a BIG “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door. It’s your space, make it yours!

Learning how to breathe and how to surrender into your body through breath is going to be one of the most important tools in your toolkit for labour and birth BUT, understanding what safety feels like in your body and how to find safety in moments of complete overwhelm and uncertainty is what is going to allow you to trust each and every whisper, yell or scream that your body is asking of you.
When you feel safe, you have the capacity to trust and surrender just that little bit more to the depths of labour and birth that your body and baby are asking of you.
When you feel safe, you are reminded that your body is NEVER trying to hurt you. It is ALWAYS, trying to work with you.
Feeling safe allows you to make decisions from a place of knowledge and deep intuition.
You have complete trust in yourself, your ability and your KNOWING. No one knows your body and baby better than YOU.
However, understanding how safety feels in your body starts in pregnancy. Most of us live in a state of nervous system dysregulation: fight/flight/ freeze without even knowing it.

Most of us live our day to day lives in our sympathetic nervous system (our active, more heightened nervous system) when actually our parasympathetic nervous system, our calm nervous system should be our baseline, regulatory place of being. The place we come back to throughout the day to re-centre and feel at peace and ease within ourselves.

Learning how to regulate your nervous system, find balance and a place of grounding during pregnancy is going to allow you to find safety in labour and birth with much greater ease and trust. We cannot find calm in a storm if you have never felt the depths of true calm and safety when unchallenged.

Learning to feel safe in your body takes time.
If you want to learn more, come join me in a class or book a 1:1 session with me.

But in the meantime, go out and play. Literally, go Play- have fun, swing on the monkey bars, have a kitchen boogie, go play with your dog and listen in to your body and how it feels when you are doing these things.
This is safety, a place of joy, presence and peace.

NI**LE THRUSH. ☀️
- let’s be honest, it’s a b*tch 🥵
So here are my tips for natural thrush removal:

🥦 Diet- lots of veg and some fruit, protein and good fats eg; olive oil, avocado, nuts, omega 3s, olive oil...minimise dairy and white sugar, avoid yeast too (soo if you are eating lactation cookies (a lot of them will have brewers yeast in them).

🫐 Oral probiotics- bioceuticals breastfeeding probiotics, you can also put Indie on some newborn probiotics as well from bioceuticals if you wanted to too (try to prevent the thrush transferring back and forth). Life space are also great and less $$$ just from chemist warehouse.

🍊 Grapefruit seed extract: use tablets or capsules, 250mg three or four times a day orally. Great to try before moving to oral antibiotics.

Topical treatments:

🥥 Virgin coconut oil combined with bicarb soda and even some probiotics to create a paste. Apply to ni***es (just wipe away before breastfeeding and apply post feeds)

💦 Rinsing your ni***es with vinegar and water solution: (1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, to 1 cup of water ratio) or baking soda (1tablespoon to 1 cup). And rinse after every feed. Us a fresh cotton ball to apply and don’t double dip, new cotton ball with each application. Create a new solution each day!!

🌞 Keep your ni***es dry by frequently changing breast pads as thrush grows well in a moist and warm environment.

💦 Clean teats and dummies thoroughly after use and boil for five minutes. Replace weekly if possible.

😶‍🌫️ To prevent the spread of thrush, wash your hands thoroughly after nappy changes and before and after applying any creams/lotions.

🌞 Wash towels, bras, cloth nursing pads etc. in hot soapy water and air dry outside.

Consult your GP for further thrush options.

· Thrush in your baby’s mouth is treated using an oral gel or drops (Nyastatin).

· Breast and ni**le thrush is treated with antifungal medicine and antifungal ni**le gel/creams.

· Treat any other site of fungal infection in the whole family, i.e. va**na, nappy rash, feet.
