Do you or someone you know experience the following?:

Have experienced recurrent episodes of depression.
Notice patterns of rumination (getting “stuck in your head”), overthink, worry or mentally replay past events.
Experience automatic negative thoughts or self-criticism.

If so, Mindfulness Based CBT
(MBCBT) might be something that could be helpful. MBCBT is an evidence based group therapy program that focuses on helping individuals develop a different relationship with their thoughts and emotions. Rather than trying to change or challenge thoughts, participants learn to notice them as passing mental events.

More information about the referral process can be found on our website: https://securemindspsychology.com.au/services/mbcbt/

Our very own clinical psychologist and Director Dylan D'Arcy will be facilitating this group with more details to come!

Whether its your room, study or office, you don't need a lot of money to create a restful space! Some options on a shoestring could include: Changing your light globe from white to warm (these are often available at stores like Bunnings!) A personal favourite of our staff is lofi-beats on YouTube! Music or even white noise can be especially good at promoting a flow state if that is your thing! Studies have shown that different shades of green promote bodily relaxation. Try accessorising with green or others colours that make you feel good!

We’re officially saying goodbye to summer and stepping into autumn. There’s so much beauty in the changing of the seasons, and perhaps a reminder that embracing change and maybe uncertainty (or maybe just tolerating it, that’s okay too!) is part of life. Melbourne’s weather, in particular, certainly tests our resilience and adaptability!

Seasons come and go, just as they do in life—with friends, jobs, and even states of being. From a psychological perspective, maybe this season invites you to release something and leave it in the past. Or perhaps your goal is to better accept when life doesn’t quite follow the script you had in mind. Maybe its a season of gratitude and enjoying what's working in your life right now.

On a more practical level, embracing seasonal change can be such a great way to have something to look forward to and to stay connected with the unique experience that nature offers. Do you have any seasonal traditions? If so, I would love to hear them in the comments!

Sometimes catching up can feel exhausting and high pressure. As an introvert myself, I often feel this way! The good news is, it doesn't have to be high pressure. Engaging in a shared activity can really take the pressure off talking continuously or having to think of things to say, whilst still enjoying the company of another.

Community doesn’t have to look fancy Coffee can be simple, instant coffee is fine and dinner doesn’t have to be aesthetic or Instagram worthy! Your house doesn’t have to be perfect either. Keeping things low-effort can actually make it easier for people to show up as they are.

Keep reaching out, even if people can’t make it every time. Send the text, suggest the walk, invite someone along for errands. Community takes time, but the small, ordinary moments are often where real connection grows.

“Dialectical” can sound like a big, intimidating word, in the context of therapy though, it just means that two potentially opposing things can be true at the same time.

For example, you can accept something as it is while also wanting to change it. You might say, “I made a mistake, and I’m going to practice and get better.” Both are true: you acknowledge what happened without denying it, and you also commit to growth.

Dialectical thinking helps us move away from rigid “either/or” thinking and toward a more balanced “both/and” perspective.

It goes without saying that perhaps being told when we were young to "get off your phones/games and go outside" is actually very science-approved advice! With many work occupations now relying on technology, our collective usage and screen time has increased. Whilst it's unlikely this will change, what we can do is be more intentional with our spare time. Spending time in natural environments has been consistently associated with reduced stress and improved mood. What is your go-to green space that helps you unwind?

Spending time in a green space doesn't have to be a full day trip either.
Try searching “parks near me” on your maps app, perhaps you might find some local botanical gardens, walking trails, or riverside paths nearby.

Negative thoughts are a normal part of the human experience. At times, however, they can become so persistent and overpowering that they begin to affect our day-to-day functioning.

These Automatic Negative Thoughts (often called “ANTs”) might sound like:
“I’m so stupid.”
“I’ll never be able to do X.”
“I’ll never be able to move on.”
“It’s all my fault.”

While self-reflection is essential for personal growth, excessive self-criticism can take a toll on our mental health. When negative thoughts become frequent, intense, or hard to let go of, they can start to shape how we see ourselves and the world around us.

If you feel like ANTs are lingering too often or for too long, our psychologists can work alongside you to help identify, challenge, and reframe these thoughts — supporting you in building healthier, more balanced thinking patterns.

New year, new beginnings — and maybe a new referral!

If improving your mental health is on your 2026 goals list, consider chatting with your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan or a new referral (if you've previously had a mental health care plan). A small step now can help open the door to meaningful change and support throughout the year ahead. As of January 1st, the referral refreshes and you may be eligible for up to 10 rebated sessions under Medicare per calendar year.

Under Medicare, referrals can be made at any time of year and can be issued for 6 or 4 sessions under Medicare (however, only a total of 10 sessions can be rebated per calendar year).

If you have any questions at regarding rebates and referrals you are welcome to visit our FAQ page or give our friendly staff a call on 03 8774 5440
