What is Spinal Decompression and what can it help with?

You might have the questions after seeing our previous post. Spinal Decompression Therapy happens under ideal conditions of traction, where positive pressure in the disc changes to negative pressure, which creates a “suctioning” action that draws fluid back into the disc. This also helps improve bloody flow, bring healthy nutrients into the disc and rehydrate it.

Utilising a decompression table, this can create an environment for discs to heal themselves, which can help with disc bulges, herniations, extrusions and more.

It can help with the following conditions and more:

✔️ Disc Bulges / Herniations
✔️ Spinal Stenosis
✔️ Sciatica
✔️ Disc Degeneration
✔️ Arm and Leg Pain and Numbness
✔️ Facet Syndrome
✔️ Pinched Nerves
✔️ General Neck and Back Pain that isn’t responding to other therapies

Some frequent questions we get are:

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Generally no, it is quite relaxing. There can occasionally be some post soreness treatment for 5-10 minutes

Q: Do I have to get my back cracked as well?
A: No, this therapy works effectively on it’s own. However, you can boost effectiveness and recovery by combining other modalities we offer like adjustments, massage, dry needling.

Q: Can I use private health?
A: Yes! This is covered under chiropractic in your extras. You can also get a CDM plan from your GP or go through work cover and TAC.

Q: Is it safe and evidence based?
A: Yes! We will perform a thorough examination and history taking to ensure you are a good candidate for the treatment. There is also plenty of research saying this works!

💡 What is causing my lower back pain and what can I do about it? 💡

Lower back pain is a complicated subject for something that is so common. It is the single leading cause of disability worldwide, 16% of Australians are currently living with LBP and over 80% of people experience it at least once in their life.

With increasingly sedentary lifestyles and poor medical management, it is becoming a bigger and more important issue.

There are many conditions that cause lower back pain including;

🔹 Muscle strains / spasms
🔹 Restricted joint / facet joint pain
🔹 Disc herniations / nerve pain
🔹 Bone pain
🔹 Muscle weakness
🔹 Pregnancy

Often, lower back pain is caused by a combination of the above.

There are a few different treatment options for lower back pain, depending on the cause, such as;

🔹 Chiropractic adjustments
🔹 Massage / soft tissue release
🔹 Joint mobilisations
🔹 Dry needling
🔹 Stretches and exercises
🔹 Lifestyle / ergonomic advice

These often work well in combination with each other to achieve the best and quickest results.

We will post a video soon of some exercises you can start doing now to get some relief. As always, check in with your healthcare professional to get an accurate diagnosis of your lower back pain and contact us if you needed advice or help with it!

❓What can you do if you work at a desk all day and get pain as a result?

There are a number of issues that are caused by sitting at your desk all day. The first is that your body doesn’t like being in the same position for extended periods of time, so spending up to 8 hours (sometimes 14!) at your desk can have detrimental effects on your body.

The second issue is that there are worse postures than others. With regards to working at a desk, we refer to this as ergonomics. Having poor posture of your spine, legs and even wrists can also cause issues.

Prolonged sitting and poor ergonomics can cause a number of different issues. This includes:

💡 Neck Pain
💡 Lower Back Pain
💡 Headaches
💡 Sciatica
💡 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
💡 Tennis Elbow
💡 More

There are 4 main things that you can do if you are spending extended hours working at a desk/computer:

♦ Take frequent breaks - Get up and move every 30-60 minutes
♦ Ensure good ergonomics - Set up your work environment to ensure good posture for all of your joints and ease stress on your muscles
♦ Look after your body - Stretch, exercise, drink water and eat well to support your body
♦ See someone - If you need help, see your healthcare practitioners to help loosen up and strengthen your body

Keep your eyes out for an upcoming post where we will take you through some exercises you can do at home to help give you some relief from your pain.

As always, reach out if you need any help with your pain or stiffness!

💡 What is causing my neck pain and what can I do about it? 💡

Neck pain is becoming increasingly common around the world, with around 2/3rds of people experiencing neck pain at one moment of their life.

⚡ What is tennis elbow and what can you do to fix it? ⚡

Despite the name, only 5% of people suffering from tennis elbow actually related the injury to tennis!

Tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylopathy) refers to pain in the lateral elbow due to damage to the tendons that attach to the bony prominence called the lateral epicondyle.

These muscles are responsible for extending your wrist. This is generally an overuse injury that leads to stress, inflammation, micro tearing and degeneration of the muscle tendons.

As with other conditions, it is important to get an accurate diagnosis. Once diagnosed, a combination of hands on treatment, lifestyle modification and rehab can help many tennis elbow cases. A tennis elbow brace can also be used to avoid aggravating it if you can't avoid certain activities.

There are a few stretches and exercises that you can start with to help with your tennis elbow. Stay tuned for another post later in the week where we will show you some of these.

If you need help with your tennis elbow, contact us at The Chiro Lab. 🙌

📣 What is Sciatica and what can you do to fix it? 📣

There is so much confusion about what Sciatica is and the different ways to help it. From where it is, to what the symptoms are and who you should see about it, there is a lot of different information out there.

I try to simplify it here for you. So what is it? Simply it describes a set of symptoms: back pain and leg pain along the sciatic nerve path. But that doesn't tell you what is causing those symptoms. Causes can include:

⚡ A disc herniation
⚡ Spinal degeneration
⚡ Piriformis muscle spasm
⚡ And other causes

These can cause a number of different symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, electric pain and weakness.

🤔 the first step is getting an accurate diagnosis, which will then inform the course of care.

Once diagnosed, a combination of conservative care (Chiro/osteo/physio), exercises and lifestyle modification can help fix a lot of cases of sciatica.

⛹️ There are some exercises that give relief to a lot of people with sciatica. Stay tuned for another post this week showing you some of these.

If you are suffering with sciatica and need some help, feel free to contact us at The Chiro Lab. 📞
