Low FODAMP choc-banana breakfast oats 🍌🥣

This breakky idea is great for people following a low FODMAP diet or those who are lactose-intolerant.

Enjoy this sweet chocolatey-hug on a cold winter’s morning (or any time of year 😊)

*Serves 1

Ingredients:
¼ cup quick oats (plain)
½ cup (125ml) lactose-free milk
1 tsp sunflower seeds
1 tsp cocoa powder (heaped)
1 tbsp lactose-free yoghurt
1 firm banana (or your choice of low FODMAP fruit such as blueberries or sliced strawberries)
1 tbsp maple syrup (or honey if tolerated)

Method:

1. Combine oats, cocoa powder, sunflower seeds and lactose-free milk into a bowl. If the mixture is a little too dry add an extra dash of milk.

2. Microwave on high for 1 minute 30 seconds and stir well.

3. Microwave for a further 30 seconds.

4. Allow to stand for 30 seconds then add a dollop of add lactose-free yogurt, sliced banana and drizzle with maple syrup.

*Taste option: for a lighter take or different flavour swap cocoa powder for a pinch of cinnamon.

*Bulk it up by adding an extra teaspoon of sunflower seeds and another tablespoon of lactose-free yoghurt.

*For a more chocolatey hit add another heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder.

I hope this picture does it justice because this super bowl really is yummy, yummy! 😋

IBS (or Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a common gastro intestinal (GI) disorder affecting one in seven adults. It is characterised by symptoms like bloating, excess wind, abdominal pain/cramping and altered bowel habits (diarrhoea and/or constipation). In some cases, people may also experience fatigue, difficulty sleeping, nausea, loss of appetite and weight loss.

FODMAPs are a group of dietary sugars found in many common foods which have been found to worsen symptoms in people with IBS, whilst temporary dietary restriction of these FODMAPs improves symptoms. It is important that dietary restriction of these FODMAPs is done under close monitoring and review with an accredited practising dietitian.

The low FODMAP diet can help to manage IBS symptoms whilst allowing those individuals affected to enjoy the pleasures of eating and living life more comfortably.

So, if you and your gut do not feel or seem quite right, our accredited practising dietitian is always here to assist you through your gut health journey.

Book an appointment with Irene today. Give us a call or book on online at https://optimisehealthosteocp.com.au/. Medicare plans, doctor’s referrals and private bookings are always welcome. 😊

4 exercises for tip-top back health

This 1-minute video demonstrates 4 back stretches, each of 1 repetition.

Feel free to do more than 1 repetition per exercise depending on your body’s needs. 2-3 reps per exercise or going through the lot of 4 exercises 2-3 times is often quite enough.

Exercises (in order shown) include:
1. Cat-cow stretch – tip: keep arms straight throughout
2. Sphinx – tip: shine your chest forward, relax tummy & backside, hold for ~10 sec
3. Child’s pose – tip: press bottom back to your heels, hold for ~10 sec
4. Mermaid – tip: if you have stiff hips stack the top leg over the bottom leg rather than the ‘Z’ sit as shown.

PM me if you have any questions. 😊

Enjoy!

GET MOVING & KEEP ACTIVE EVERYBODY!

The Olympics are finally here and there is no better reason to get moving and keep active!

Regular physical activity and/or exercise can take many different forms. It can be fun, engaging, interesting and invigorating for the whole body.

Some of the many benefits of regular exercise are:
• Increased longevity
• Decreased anxiety and depression
• Improved cognitive function
• Increased feelings of well-being
• Improvement in heart and lung function
• Reduction in cardiovascular disease
• Enhanced performance at work, school, recreational and sporting activities
• Higher physical function and independent living in older individuals

As we all know, exercise does not need to be organised or confined to the gym. It can include things like going for a 20-30-minute walk during your lunch break or after work, parking your car a little further away from the shops, taking the stairs, playing with your kids or dog, kick-kick, throwing a few hoops, dancing to your favourite music, walking or jogging with a friend, gardening, chopping firewood, doing some yoga or Pilates, etc… the list goes on and on.

Achieving more physical activity in your day (and life) is really not as hard as one may think. Be creative, make a start, gradually build on that effort and watch it become a thing of habit.

P.S. involving your pet or child in your attempt at some exercise can be quite enjoyable too!

Looking for something warm and healthy to eat this winter? ☃️😋

Try this jam-packed veggie soup! Loaded with wonderful veggies and full of fibre, it can even be used as a stew and served with your favourite grain or even bread.

See the recipe below...

*Makes 9-10 servings

Ingredients:
2 tbs canola or olive oil
½ leek
2 carrots
2 sticks celery
1 red potato, diced
½ zucchini, diced
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 x 400g can of cannellini beans, drained
4-6 broccoli florets, cut into bite-size pieces
1x 400g can diced tomatoes
100mL tomato passata
1 teaspoon salt & sweet paprika + pepper to taste
½ - 1 small lemon

Method:

- Cut the leek in half lengthways (about 2cm away from the root) and rinse out any soil. Peel the carrots, trim the celery and finely chop all 3 veg. Place into a large saucepan on medium heat with the oil and add the potato and zucchini. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and stir-through for about 1 minute.

- Pour in the beans, broccoli, diced tomatoes and passata. Add 800mL of water (it may need an additional 100mL or so) and bring to the boil. Add the seasoning, and simmer on medium-high heat for about 40 minutes. Season with lemon and serve with bread.

Also goes as a great accompaniment or entrée to fish and salad, especially on a cold winter’s day.

More winter warming dishes to come!
