Disability support workers are essential for many people who live with disabilities independently at home.

George Ayoub, who uses a wheelchair and lives with post-polio and a respiratory condition, usually has a roster of casual workers who come to his home to help him with daily tasks from morning to night, but finding someone to fill a shift has become increasingly difficult in recent months.

"I wouldn't be able to survive without them. You know, you've got to have all your bodily functions attended to," he told 7.30.

"I had this ridiculous incident last October, December I think it was, where I'm waiting in bed to get up and nobody showed up.

"I laid back in bed with a tear in my eye, thinking, 'Is this what it’s come down to?'"

I'm asking if everyone on my feed could put this as their status for 2 hours. I'm pretty sure I know the ones who will but I'd like to be surprised by more of you. Leave an Orange Heart for Autism Awareness. Thank you!!

The safety of our patients, staff and community remains our priority, and in line with new pandemic orders, additional screening processes are now in place at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH).

All visitors, including parents and carers, are required to provide their COVID-19 vaccination status as part of the screening process. Those who are unable to provide evidence of their full vaccination status will be required to undertake a Rapid Antigen Test and prove a negative result. This test will be supplied by the RCH screening team. When a negative result has been returned, these visitors will be supplied with an N95 mask to wear while in the hospital.

Visitor restrictions are still in place throughout the hospital, and surgical masks continue to be required for vaccinated visitors and children aged eight years and over.

If you have an upcoming appointment at the RCH, please allow more time to complete your screening upon arrival.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during these difficult times.
